newbee to redhat driver update questions

hi i am very new to the linux world of any sort mandrake redhat all completley new to me
ok so i load it up a few days ago and now am trying to load for the first time a updated driver the nvidia driver
i follow the instructions to the T
but all i get when i log in to startx is a black screen
the read me files says to change the nv in the FX86Config file to nvidia done that
says to get rid of the module line "dri"
the other two lins says to get rid of is not in the config file
when i look at the 86log it says GLX not loaded or something like that
i made sure i had all of the files it says and at leas that version or higher
so natuarlly i go out of x window and try to see whats up natuarlly being new completey new at this sort of thing im kinda lost
so in any event i find my way to the emacs program damn that thing is confuseing
but any way find my way in emacs to get to the config file to change it back to original
do that save it log out of emacs
uninstall the nvidia driver wala back to startx
every thing is normal
i have redhat 9 with what ever updates it has to it from the redhat network
have been 3 kernal updates since i loaded this 4 days ago
yes i did let the nvida installer build for this
anyone got any idea on whats going on that will help me
sure would appreciate it
im useing a gforce3 ti 200 msi card

natually these are the files after i uninstalled the nvidia driver if that makes a diff

how do i submit the config file it says file type not supported for upload

just cp the file somewheres else on your drive and before you upload it just give it an extension such as .log or .txt for you can upload it, cause there is only a selective few of recognized formats allowed for upload

Can you change the config file back (to Driver "nvidia" and no Load "dri"), and then post the X log from a failing run? Copy it to somewhere else, then change the config file back again (to Driver "nv" so that X will start), then attach the log file from that failed run.

The log file from a run without the nVidia drivers even in use is useless, I'm afraid.

sure bw give me a little bit i have to figure out how to copy and save in emacs from scratch
this is one program that seems to be overly bundled with options making it complicated
to bad you cant use the old dos program on this thing that was a nice editor
but in any event ill post one in a bit if i can manage this emacs thing

ok d00d i dont' know if you are understanding, and yes i understand you say your new, but you have to change your xf86config file back to useing the "nvidia" and not "nv" and then try to boot and when it crashes or whatever it does, try ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X and if that doesn't work boot back into init 3 and copy the xfree86log somewheres and upload that for we can see what is going on....if you keep uploading the xfree86log using the nv driver we can't really help you troubleshoot this...

ok sorry for any confusion
but this is the file
i copied this file before i reverted back to a operable x window
if its showing that it is not i dont know how that can be i did not copy it into the orginal folder i copied it to another folder then uploaded it
i will do the same again
as it is very late i will have to do this sometime in the morning

ok i will tell you why this is not the file...if you notice in that log file it says:

and then all the lines below being with "(II) NV(0):"...so no this is not the file....

k do this...press ctrl-alt-f1 and type "emacs /etc/inittab" when you get into the file, you will notice it says id:5:initdefault, move down to it and change that 5 to a 3....if you do not know what this does, all it is doing is changing how your computer boots....5 is graphical mode, 3 is text based...so when you reboot install your nvidia drivers and make all necessary changes in the config files...and then type startx....now when your machine crashes reboot it or kill X whatever you need to do and you will come back into text based mode (init 3) and log in....now navigate directly to /var/log folder and copy the xfree86.0.log file to somewheres else on your harddrive, since you didn't try to startx since the previous time it died, these logs will still show what went on when you were using the nvidia driver...then change your driver back to "nv" and then if you wish you can change your /etc/inittab to boot back directly to graphical mode by changing the value to 5 and when you do finally log back in, you will have the correct file for upload;)

ok here it is i guess i really didnt send you the file cause looking at this one it does look different
anyway here it is sorry for that guess i had done something wrong
ok this was the pattern i used to generate this file
loaded the nvidia driver first
successfull install it said
went to the config file changed nv to nvidia and got rid of the Load "dri"
then went to startx ok same as before no screen what so ever have to reboot at this time dont know how to get out any other way tried ctrl alt backspace and delete to no avail so do hard reboot
go to log in go to emacs and copy folder to other area on drive
then uninstall nvida driver successfull uninstall
then go to emacs to change config file back to original set up
then startx no problems back to normal
ok so here i am loading the file for you

Are you sure the driver installed correctly?

Your log file indicates that you're still loading the old libglx.a file instead of the nVidia libglx.so file for the "glx" extension. It also indicates that you don't have an nvidia_drv.o file anywhere in the driver path (/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers).

Both of these files (libglx.so and nvidia_drv.o) are installed by the installer (they used to be installed by the NVIDIA_GLX package, but with the installer you don't need individual packages anymore).

Can you post a copy of /var/log/nvidia-installer.log from the install attempt? It might also be worth moving your /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a file somewhere else after installing the nVidia drivers (though I don't think that's the actual problem...).

absolutely 4 times installed and installed all times said install was successfull
if it was ever listed as unsuccessfull i would have stopped and would not go onto the xwindow in the first place
though i am new to linux completely
ive used computers for over 10 years
windows versions
and i do know the difference between the different statments of successfull and failed to install statmenets by software
ive seen one other post about a black screen for this 4363
ive read the log also and see that nothing is loaded i think this is the problem but then again im not sure
seeing the way files are handled and where they are put in linux and windows are completley different
before i even attempted to upgrade the drive i read the install notes for the driver several times
and confirmed i had on my system all the appropriate files and versions
as stated in there system requirements area
i have a p4 1.6 intel
dual boot to windows xp pro
msi gforce3 ti 200 vid card
seems quite odd to me
the driver as stated will build a software setup based upon the kernal each and every time it did this before installing and all was successfull from beginning to end so the installer software reported
no error codes no nothing
nothing more then installation completed successfully each and every time
thats about all i can say i got no error codes no error screans nothing
go to startx and wham black screen
each and every time
what more info can i offer that might supply a better description
though i think this is about as complete as there as as what the screens where telling me
i can provide other files if need be
i can install again
if you want
seems to be no big deal i cant detect any harm its doing
but like i said ive posted my actions earlier in the way it was performed
each and every time was the exact same way

did you update your kernel, cause maybe it is installing to the older kernel folder...

yes ive updated the kernel rhn or redhat network
auto updated kernel and source files and pkgs of basic setup
that is why the driver asked me if i would like to have it build for that kernal as stated before i have let it do that and it says its done that
ok now to other question
ok so what your saying is that the old kernal is still on system and is still accessable
hmmmm ok how to i find out
i have noticed that when i log into grub it says there three versions of the linux on my machine i just thought they where the older kernals but not able tolog into that
hmmm ok so if i can still log into them that maybe what is happening
ok so how would ya know or how would i know if it was loaded into other kernal
and if so can it be moved to the new kernal

hrmm ok now, in the console type "uname -r" to give you the kernel version being used....and you can type something like "rpm -qa|grep -i kernel" to see which are installed on your box....now once you know what kernel you are using and what ones you are not using, you "su" to root and uninstall the older kernels, and this will be done by "rpm -e kernel.x.x.x" where the x's stand for the version numbers...after you do all that try the "rpm -qa|grep -i kernel" to make sure only the kernel you are using exists, and try re-installing the nvidia drivers....and if it comes down to it, or if you just want to try it from the get go, there is a a command you can use with the nvidia installer to specify the kernel folder...its up to you, just play around :P

Like I said, post /var/log/nvidia-installer.log from an install run (not an uninstall run).

The older kernels aren't causing the problem. The problem is that the GLX stuff (the libglx.so file and the nvidia_drv.o file) aren't being found; these are completely independent of the kernel version.

ok bw i assure you that log file is the exact one that was used during a install
i redid everything and it is exactly the same
infact i made sure i did it twice
that is a install log file not after uninstall
i only uninstalled afterwords to post the log file to set it up on here for you guys to look at
it was copied onto a seperate drive not even the one that red hat is on
to make sure no way of a conflict or anyway of it being accessed
still the same results
i even just redid the install for redhat
just about two hours ago and redid everything the log is identical
for some reason the nvidia driver is not being located as you have stated looks like the GLX thingy but im not really sure
im at a loss
i guess but only my guess the nvidia driver has some bugs cant see how is the redhat no error messages ever on the install
works fine till i load the nvidia driver
then no screen as the log states
oh well hope someone can figure it out would be nice to update the nvidia driver

these are not old logs these are from this install bout 10 min ago
ok to reafirm my process this is the pattern i used
i downloaded the file again to make sure its not corrupt in anyway
i log out to console
install driver
no download to from nvidia for kernal tried that a few times nothing ever happens
so say no to download
it recompiles for kerne2.4.20-13.9
completes install with success
change XF86Config
startx
black screen
hard reboot
copy XF86Config,XFree86.0.log,nvidia-installer.log
uninstall driver
change config file back to original state
upload the 3 files to forum
i hope this clears things up a bit more for anyone trying to help
