John Carmack on DOOM 3 and Game Development Trends (http://www.gamespy.com/e32003/feature/pc/1002235/)

quote jc:

"You have to make compromises," he explained. A complex lighting renderer meant that players wouldn't be able to enter a room full of a hundred monsters and mow them down like grass.

not till the nv50 :D

I heard carmack is making a new game called CARMACK REDEEMER in which you play a spotty games developer whos mission is to destroy ati.

Rumours are that the "ARB2" gun can be used to kill of the radeon threat by forcing them to use slow as sh1t generic rendering pathways.

I'm so pissed at the dissing that Johnny-boy threw on ATi recently that I'm about to the point where I could really give a hoot about Doom3.

The game is going to suck anyways. Great eye-candy for sure, but 10-to-1 odds it ain't gonna be much fun to play. :(

("Bitter, me? You think that I'm BITTER?!?! Son, you ain't SEEN bitter yet!")

I agree, it's been overhyped on visuals alone.

The gameplay will be your standard unreal2 affair cut to the chase guys this is reality.

Carmak said it would be short as well.

People bashing JC need to get a clue. Doom 3 with have gameplay like Unreal 2? LOL, the Doom 3 alpha alone stomps all over Unreal 2, and that's three 20 square meter levels.

Visuals are what give ID the possibilities for gameplay. Doom 3 will be the scariest game ever, simply because it looks so damn realistic.

ID have made nothing but great games, so there is no reason to doubt them. Bashing a future game because the lead programmer optimized it a little better for nVidia? I'm sure it will run just as good on ATI cards at the time of release.

A spotty game developer, that's a good one. I won't even get into what's he's done for the PC gaming. Whether you like Doom 3 or not is irrelevent but his game engine will be the standard for the next few years like all his previous workings..........

Yeah, because we all KNOW that things never change and the leader always stays in the first place.

Methinks the combination of extremely high system requirements and Half-life 2's imminent release are going to DRASTICALLY change the current "Quake is the be-all, end-all game engine" logic.

(Although I ain't going to deny Mr.Carmack's impact on the gaming scene before he sold his soul to nVidia. )

And some optimizations for nVidia has changed the quality of his engines?

LOL, ignorance is bliss.

No, his complicity in aiding nVidia to try and defraud the buying public cheesed me off a bit though.

Well I'm real glad your happy, but I'm gonna keep on with me search for the truth. :p

I'd like it if D3 could do a realistic looking outdoor scene, I get a bit claustraphobic in all those corridors.

And ain't it always just a bit too dark in every screenshot we've seen too?

(grumble-grumble-grumble-grumble!)

Do you have _any_ proof whatsoever for any of this?

That fact is, it ran doom3 to JC's satisfaction well enuff to give the scores it did.. What goes on underneath is irrelevant.. if it looks right, it is right.

Some ppl will believe anything _but_ the truth..

D'you mean aside from nVidia being in charge of the whole thing and ATi not knowing about it 'til after the fact? No, not really....and I don't see much of a need.

THE PROOF IS RIGHT THERE!!!

Some people will believe anything_but_the truth even when it's right in front of them.

LOL is it just me or does that look corny like some sort of bad sci fi.

The rest looks fine but theres these stupid flying heads and skulls and the spider with a babys head. Wasen't that done in toystory ?

Also the top of the head is VERY angular.

It's quite surprsing. DOom3 does not actually use very high polly characters it seems but the bumpmapping and EXCELENT texture work really shine through.

Just look at the top of the head ugh :\

The ones at the back sort of look like kryton from red dwarf
:D

I think krytons head has a higher polygon count tho :p

Thank you, I was afraid to mention how blocky I thought the skulls looked for fear of being flamed to death for possibly insulting 'the great Carmack'.

"What do you MEAN they look blocky!!!! Do you have ANY IDEA how many polys they're made up of?!?!"

(Hilarious pict BTW, I gotta get the Red Dwarf DVD set soon. I've only seen 3-4 episodes but I loved the book and the shows I saw I loved. :) )

Hehe thx I was expecting a flame but I got you =]

It really seems doom3 is quite a low polly game to compensate for the extravagant shadow system :\

The shadowing system imo is ahead of it's time so I guess we have to see such compromises :\

I must say tho that while everything is quite low polly from what I can see the texture are very good and the bumpmapping is used quite well to hide the low poly modles to the point you can only determine if a modle is low polly by looking at the polygons on the outside of it sinse all the polygons on the inside are virtually unidenfiable thanks to the bumpmapping.

Still seems like a step backwards in terms character poly count which is a shame because with quite a few more polygons on those heads the illusion would really be complete.

I thought it was common knowledge by now that Doom3 was not going to sport high poly counts in favor of the dynamic real time lighting system. Guess not.

So you all are totally excited and hot for a game that's gonna feature blocky characters but really nice shadows... :eek2:

Ok, I think I'll be going now.
