Uninstalled old drivers.
Installed 3.4.
Launched AC2...
No difference to Pixel Shader or Shadow bugs.
Performance unchanged or slightly slower.
2 minutes later, the screen freezes completely.
Rebooted, tried again (for the hell of it).
1 minute later, frozen again.
Uninstalled.
Reinstalled 3.0.
Plans to sell Radeon ASAP: unchanged.
This was probably ATI's last chance to recover my confidence before I switch back to Nvidia.
Good going ATI, I can really tell you put a lot of effort into this one <roll eyes>

Criticizing ATI might be somewhat cathartic for you, but your difficulties are not because of the design of the Radeon card. Damn fine cards - as evidenced by thousands of users who don't experience any problems. Rather the opposite. You are either ranting because you are genuinely at the end of your rope or you are trying to boost your stock holdings. Either way, you have my empathy. Defects happen. Time to return your card. That's what the warranty if for.

My god, how can you seriously belive that ever problem is a hardware defect. that is just sad.
You have to realzie one thing, eather ATi has huge issues with drivers, or ATi has a bigger issue with sending out hundreds of thousands of bad cards. Now todays factorys only let about 1 of 1000 products be flawed, at the most slip by.

That's what you get for playing disappointing games like that and actually paying $12/month for it too. ATI is doing us a favor!
Never had any real problems with my 9700pro it has brought a smile to face ever since I swopped it for my ti4600 :)
These new drivers have nice improvement in IQ, FSAA and AF are faster in the few games/sims I play (flight and racing :) )
So far I love them, WELL DONE ATI :)
will benchmark later as I am to busy playing :)
Simon.
What do ya want for that 9700p ( PM Me) ?
We may be able to find a good home for it.

LOL that is in the ture ati spirit.
If any game preforms awful under an ati card, 'you dont need that game, lets not look at the numbers'
when ati drivers dont support all os's 'you dont need that os, dont judge us from that'

I guess my genuine dislike for the game doesn't factor into it. Glad you cleared that up though, because here I thought I made that comment for a completely different reason.

I suppose that it is because I have a very similar system to you and have NO problems at all. None. I use my rig for everything from gaming to programming. Hmmm.

I don't see compelling evidence for either of your claims. Please point me to your sources. On the other hand, you can find a number of popular threads here in these forums where disappointment runs high over the mess that was NV30 or about how nVidia is cheating in the driver department. So which of the companies has the issues?

threedaysdwn.
I didn't have problems with AC2 with my 9700 and cat3.2s.
I still have the game but don't want to reload it necessarily unless I could be of help.
What are the exact symtoms?

Well yesterday I prepped my computer for the summer (since it's no longer doubling as a server) by reinstalling Windows XP/formatting my OS partition and moving it to a new case (Antec case with Koolance water-cooling system) and a new 430 watt PSU...
The old case was too poorly ventilated, small, and the 300W power supply, while having proven reliable for years, was aging.
So now with the new PSU, a water-cooler attached to the Radeon, and a fresh install... I'm happy to report that the 3.4 drivers are performing much more admirably.
They still have the AC2/NWN pixel shader bug, and a couple others... but otherwise they seem to be as stable as the 3.0s with somewhat improved performance.
If ATI releases Cat 3.5s that fix the pixel shader bugs (without adding new ones) it will do a lot to boost my confidence in their abilities. For the time being I'm content with my 9700 Pro... but still planning my next upgrade to be a 5900 Ultra.
That is, unless R360 shows up WITH driver bug fixes.

According to Terry the AC2 issue should be fixed in the next drivers;)

Well the UDA is a good indicator. Then again Bug is a three letter word.
No problems here but I don't play AC either. 3.4's give me a good boost in 3dmark2003 and they seem faster in 4xaa with no noticeable IQ drop. :)
If you are having crashing problems I suspect you are either overheating or have an IRQ conflict.
Check your IRQ's and make sure nothing is sharing with the videocard.

The 3.4s produced some stuttering in Direct3d games for me. Running 3.1s now without any problems.

So far these drivers are peachy keen on my 9800. I was able to fix some of the z-buffer errors in UT-based games (namely Adventure Pinball) I had with previous ATI cards. IQ with FSAA and aniso is top-notch.
Obviously I have to do some more testing but I'm very pleased with the results so far.

3.4's ruined performance with shadows enabled in morrowind, emperor's tomb, and nolf2 for me. All three titles acted as if there was extreme texture thrashing(agp texturing)...
went back to 3.2's and all is well again -something to be said about "if it aint broke, dont fix it"
Strangely I can run the card rock solid at 480 core with the 3.4's while 472.5 is the ceiling for the 3.1's and 3.2's -weird.
