Thanks to rflair - these seem to be well liked, keepers for me.

DriverVer=08/20/2008, 8.530.0.0000

Sorry if this has been posted, I didn't see it.

Edit: So far tried GoW, FEAR, Halo 2, doom 3, Crysis, and Jericho with this set. I'm not benching for Fps, just overall smoothness and IQ. These are fantastic, noticable improvements with shadows and color from the 8.8s.

Will look into how these do, if they're good with X2's then once I finally get all my parts I'll use these... good timing since the 8.8's were disappointing.

Installed with no problems, at CCC they are labeled as Catalyst 8.9, will try to bench something in the next days. Version number 8.53 is older than previous betas 8.54, however driver date is newer (august 20th)

Official 8.9 will be from late august too, drivers need time for Microsoft to certify them. And I wouldn't expect official 8.9 until third week of month

What I have tested so far, comparing to the driver shipped with the card (8.52.6):

- Call of Juarez bench DirectX 10 1920x1200 4xAA

8.52 - Min: 13.9 Avg: 55.3 Max: 116.6
8.53 - Min: 21.5 Avg: 59.6 Max: 128.2

Nice improvement, specially in minimum framerate (on the GPU calculated waterfall)

- Devil May Cry 4 DX9 1920x1200 4xAA

8.52 - Test1: 210.22 Test2: 153.61 Test3: 243.82 Test4: 149.21
8.53 - Test1: 206.92 Test2: 149.30 Test3: 236.03 Test4: 135.77

Degraded performance in this one

- Company Of Heroes Opposing Fronts DX9 1920x1200 4xAA

8.52 - Min: 56.0 Avg: 158.0 Max: 263.2
8.53 - Min: 62.7 Avg: 147.9 Max: 242.0

Higher minimum, but lower average and maximum

These improved Crysis performance around 20% for me. I'm playing Very High on everything w/ 2xAA at 50fps average. On the 8.8 betas I was at 40.

Nice job, ATI. :)

Xion are you using the CCC 2.21 and wich lvl of it?

i am using lvl5 wich level in the game is the best to see how it performs

Guys,

I'm getting alot of stuttering in Crysis, with my new HD4870. The average FPS for the 4870 is higher than my 8800GTX but the GTX is much smoother, has no stuttering or lag.

I'm running Crysis DX-9 with the Lvl-4 Cuban Legend custom config. And the 5.53 080820 drivers

I've ran the cards back to back...and the GTX is truly much smoother.

What is going on with my 4870? I know it should be 20% fast than the GTX but it's not...it's stuttering, lagging, and hitching all over the damn place.

Please help me.

Are you running , or have tried with all ccc settings at default?

EDIT: I'm averaging 19-27 FPs using the natural mod, very smooth with everything at default settings.

Grey,

I've tried it with the card overclocked and defaults. The only thing I've changed in the CCC is Anisotropic Filtering which I've set to 16X.

I've tried with the fan control hack, without the fan control hack, I've tried 3 different drivers, the 8.8 Official, the 8.54's and the 8.53's that are posted in this thread.

I'm at a loss for words.

I have the 4870 on loan from the local computer store (they match NCIX pricing for me and let me try before I buy)

Like I said I am getting higher min, max and average frame rates compared to the 8800GTX, but the damn stuttering is driving me mad....stuttering the GTX doesn't have.

With the framerates I'm getting from the 4870 I should be able to run my custom config @ 1600X1050 with 4XAA..compared to the 2XAA max the GTX would run half decently.

I've seen alot people saying that a OS reinstall will cure the stuttering....but I don't wanna reinstall vista.

Any other ideas suggestions?

Thanks,

JC

Wow, you've been through it! Only thing I could suggest is CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) in safe mode. The reg cleaner used to find nvidia bits left over that other cleaners missed, so uncheck the others, unless you want to chance it, and let ccleaner delete the nvidia bits.

I can't think of anything else other than driver conflict. My own install is fresh and never had NV drivers installed on it.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I would uninstall the vid drivers first, then reinstall after cleaning.

Ok I'm gonna do that right now....thanks for tips. I'll update in a bit.

@Tho Jo Smale
Is it a new game you started or did you try the game reinstall. I did read somewhere it might help.

I only have the Crysis SP Demo and also upgraded from 8800GTX.
My system is slow to take full advantage of the HD 4870 but definitely there is not stuttering, but I can only speak for the WinXP.

The speed improved but in my case it's more noticeable in benchmark than in the game.
The benchmarks are here (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1706219&postcount=13), from the time I first got the card.

Ok,

I've done the ccleaner in safe mode and the catalyst re-install. I've reinstalled crysis and patched up to 1.21.

I'm at a loss.

Everything else runs fine....but Crysis....terrible.

Why would the GTX run soooo smooth...even at 20-30 fps....and the 4870 stutter running @ 30-40fps.

I'm pooched.

It's strange, when I got the 4870 I compared it with the GTX and was faster, and it felt faster

soyware viruses

sometimes i get a freak of a problem i can be watching a movie and all of the sudden i get huge stutter like if something is hogging the CPu so i check viruse spyware and what else then i look at the log book and have a loong list of cd-rom failure so i restart and itīs gone

so do like this uninstall the drivers and do NOT use a third party driver cleaner as ATI cards/drivers donīt work too well.
after uninstall restart and do a CCLEANER registry and such then install the drivers

and if that donīt work the try spybot or ad-aware

other than that i donīt know i installed these in vista and no problems

man that sucks i love this card and i couldnīt go back to Nvidia

also do a disk defrag auslogic has good defragger for both disks and registry

I may be way off here, but is it possible your card isn't ramping up to full speed for Crysis? I would have no idea why it would do that for Crysis only, but just a thought.

For those having performance issues, try this:

Go to the advanced graphics settings tab where it gives you the option to set everything to medium, high or very high. For whatever setting you use, change it to something else. If you play high, change it to all medium, and then change it back to high.

Crysis is stupid.. sometimes the engine does not optimize itself properly until you do this. I had it do this to me several times over the weekend when I was benching it.

I also found that it didn't like FRAPS much. If I ran the counter in the corner, it crawled. So I ran the benchmarking tool in the background, instead.

Nope. Good ole', regular Very High DX10.

It's changing from the 500 of desktop to the 750 or 780 depending on whether it's O/C or not.

Maybe it's the damn custom config I'm running that is screwing with the 4870 and not the 8800GTX. Maybe the 512mb frame buffer is just too small with my 2gb of system ram.

I use readyboost with a 4gb drive. I've tried disabling readyboost.

I don't know...short of a reformat and fresh OS install I'm outta ideas on how to get this thing running properly.

I'll check my sound card driver's.....it does seem somewhat dependent on how many KPA are talking/yelling etc.

Thanks,

JC

I use Contig...with the PowerDefragmenter GUI.

It works very well.
