What kind of PC will you need in order to run Doom III silky-smooth?

The benchies that have been around on Tomshardware and Anandtech indicate that you'll need a high end CPU, at least 512M of RAM, and a cutting edge video card. Not necessarily an FX 5900, but something from the FX family. I'll be a little outta luck w/my Ti4600 (800x600 here I come!).

How will an Intel Pentium 4 3.06GHz (533MHz system bus) processor do?

Kane, that CPU, coupled with a 5900 will cream Doom 3.

I feel that the system requirements for D3 have been a little overblown.

The alpha runs fine on my system (see sig) and performance will no doubt increase when the game is complete.

What if I get the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB instead?

I'm sure it will run great on that too, but looking at the benchmarks around the net (presuming that there is no cheating involved with the Doom benchmarks), the NV35 has the clear upper hand at the moment.

I predict that the 9800 will perform much better when Doom 3 is released (head to head with the NV35), but because of some optimizations, the NV35 will take the performance lead (however, un-noticable).

Okay, I might be getting the following PC.

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.06GHz (533MHz system bus)
Motherboard: Abit IC7
RAM: 2x 512MB Corsair XMS3500
Hard drive: Western Digital WD800JB
DVD-ROM: Toshiba SD-M1712 (16X DVD/48X CD)
Graphics card: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB
Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Power supply: Antec True480
Case: Cooler Master ATC-200c-MX2

Should run Doom III well. :D

By the way, where can I find the Doom III benchmarks? I can't seem to find them anymore.

ATI suxors at OGL and this probably wont change before D3 goes gold. If this is the case I will probably get a 5900. This is if the NV40 isn't out yet. (That should be an interesting race)

Before I get flamed on the ATI comment please look at whose card I run now. My previous card was a ti4600. The 4600 was a better OGL rendering device.

Kain, wait a bit and get an NV35.

as of right now, the benchmarks don't show much, if anything at all. Once the final game is out and Nvidia and ATI do what they do best, cheat...or optimize as it used to be called. So let's wait a while before we jump to any conclusions.

I think to run it on max graphics @ 1024x768x32 youll need at least GF4 Ti4600 with an Athlonxp 1800/P4 2.2ghz, if youre a really hardcore gamer and want it at 1280x1024 or maybe 1600x1200 youll want a Radeon 9700\9800Pro

you will the Earth Simulator in Yokohama, Japan that performs 35.86 trillion calculations per second, i guess that should do it..

All you'll need to play Doom III is a 166MHz Pentium with MMX, a 24x CD-ROM drive, 64MB of EDO-DRAM and a 2MB ATI 3DxPression.

You'll have to play at 300x200 and everything at minumum but you'll get between .3 and .7 fps.:drooling:

This article should put things in perspective...everything from a 5600 Ultra/9500 Pro to the new FX 5900...

You have to consider that nvidia FX cards will run doom3 at lower quality than a radeon R350 albiet faster. If you want to experience the full quality experience rather than a lower faster one then go for a high end radion.

You can always wait for the R400 which will beat the pants of nvidia ! :D

You might want to go back and research that one...

I think people are going a bit to far with this. I honestly think my XP1600 with a TI4200 will run the game just fine, probably around 30 FPS at 1024x768. Yes, Doom 3 looks pretty, but the smaller environments=faster rendering. My processor is a bit slow by todays standards, but I can't see Doom 3 absolutly killing my computer, based on the Alpha. For god's sake, Doom 3 runs at full quality on an Xbox. Also, the game isn't exactly a twitch shooter, I don't think you'll need 100 fps to play this game well. But hey, there's always people who want something better (and that would probably be 90% of the people on this message board :) )

Pelly, do yourself a favor--stay out of the Doom 3 threads. They'll lynch you! Please! It's for your own good! They're mad enough about the benchmarks as it is!
