View Full Version : I am looking for a MMORPG - How is EQ2 these days
Log, since day 1 WoW raids are far more fun then EQ because the engine is capable of so much more interaction. So much that I started to list them now and deleted the paragraph because it would have taken 3 to list them all. It started with the fact that on release, Onyxia beat EQ to having dragons thats actually flew. The only reason EQ has harder encounters is because the engine is so decrepid its a pain in the butt to actually accomplish something in it, and its hard to identify things like spells and AoE because %100 of the raid has spell detail turned to the minimum, or face a death by sparklies because of its craptastic spell visuals.
I quit EQ when we were farming time and had just started into raiding omens of war.

Raided WOW and thought it was garbage. WOW is just too easy and before you start saying something about well did you raid this did you raid that ect..the answer is yes I raided a whole lot in wow and still found it boring and not very difficult. As for the engine and scripting ect well you have not played it in a good long while and no idea what raiding is like there anymore. I have raided current WOW content and can compare but when was the last time you raided current EQ1 content? Most of the engine has undergone an overhaul over time and seems fine to me. The one area that is bad is particles but I could give a crap about that.

I still think EQ2 looks like ****...
The graphics are plastic and the world is lifeless
Yea.. while the models do have more detail.. I've never been thrilled about eq2's graphics..
1. All the models look like they are default meshs from poser exported out.
2. The world makes heavy use of repeated texture tiles so everything looks rather generic.
3. Z-buffer shadowing. -_-
4. Some spell effects were nice, but the majority of them are lack luster (I wont say WoW is too much better... I guess I am just so spoiled from final fantasy games, ya know).
5. EQ2's monster models arnt too impressive. I havnt looked much at AoC's or LotRs boss monsters, but so many MMORPGs have the crapiest models (AC1 and 2 were laughable). EQ1 was good for its day, WoW does a great job, and guild wars is pretty impressive too.
Currently though I think all MMORPGs are currently underperforming more then they should. AoC was a good attempt but its animation wonkyness brings down its high graphical effects.

I know what you mean, FFXI addiction had me by the ass.
I'm sure if they had it their way, FFXI's creators would have cut scenes and dialogue for every spell.

People only play WoW because it doesn't require much to play it. It has to be the most boring game i have EVER played. Guild Wars has more excitement than WoW.
As for EQ2 vs. WoW. EQ2 > WoW in fun, gameplay, content, storyline, graphics and sound.
I agree. Though my wife did find a use for WoW and continued the subscription for a few months after we moved for EQ2. She found it useful as a game she could play with one hand and without much thought while half asleep and breast feeding the baby at 3AM!

I recognise the place in your screenshots. To give an example of EQ2's attention to quirky detail, have you ever noticed that if you look at the bridge in the Village of Shin upstream it's based on the old willow pattern ceramics?
As the OP I forgot about this thread so it is interesting to see what has been posted. I re-subscribed back in September and played for about 2 weeks. I found the game to be as solid as ever even though it is such a performance hog. My biggest problem I had was the lack of people to play with at the lower levels. If I remember correctly I was maybe asked a couple of time to group. It was a lonely existence.
After a 7 month break I have rolled a new character in LOTRO which has a great community. To be honest I would prefer large new worlds like EQ2 and Vanguard's to explore, but the low populations are a deterrent. I really want to play a MMO but I am having difficulty in finding the perfect game for me.

Thats exactly my problem! ...
