how to shut down x windows

i am new to linux and i was wondering how to shut down x windows so i could install my video driver, i have mandrake linux 9.1, im totaly new so please help.

never mind i figured it out.

you should first use ctrl+alt+f2 to the character interface to regist . then press ctrl+alt+f7 to GUI .TO select logout and then enter the character interface .use command "rpm" or other command to install your video drive.
