View Full Version : Make Original Crysis look more like Warhead?

I tired something out this evening. I copied the Config folder from the Warhead\Game folder to the original Crysis\Game folder. I simply replaced the entire existing file. Much to my surprise, when I fired up the original Crysis I found it looked different. I know some of the CVars are different in Warhead -- but it seems to have made Crysis look more like Warhead in terms of lighting. Take a look at the pictures below. The first shot is the default Crysis Config folder. The second shot is the Warhead Config folder. Notice the difference in the Sun, especially the sunbeams. They look much more like they do in Warhead. It really helps to give the game a much warmer feel.
I don't know a ton about the differences in the way the two games handle the CVars, but I thought it was worth a try. Just thought I would share.

Here are some additional shots with the updated Config folder:

does crysis run better?
Hmmm... I think it looks exactly like Crysis normally did.

you can get a much bigger performance boost and visual boost from a 3rd party config W/custom time of day settings.
Try the Xconfig instead.

The Xconfig (but not the TOD settings) work really well with warhead as well.

Any idea if this is compatible with the Ultra High Quality Custom Config?

yeah the time of day modification (makes the biggest difference with the visuals) and the config file settings are totally independant from each other.
The time of day (aka TOD) settings are user created mod files from the sandbox editor where people have basically edited the sunlight/moon ambient lighting settings for each map and each one replaces the Crytek time of day file for their maps.
The config file that comes with the Xconfig mod is simply your environmental details, effects, etc.. settings.
Which is why you can use any custom graphics config file with any time of day settings (and more importantly) why you can use any of these crysis grahpics config files with warhead (but not the time of day files as they're not for warhead maps).
I'll be willing to bet though that it won't be long before we start to see some REALLY nice TOD mods for warhead. I think that crytek did a much better job with the warhead maps than they did with crysis. Specifically the pilot level... woah MAMA. The lighting in that level was SPECTACULAR.

However, I do think they used entirely too much orange in the first mission. :thumbdwn: I don't think they did a very good job from the night to sunrise at all. It was done better on the first level in crysis and that was made a lot better by the modding community.
Example:
Here is how Warhead's early dawn was done. (and these were all done using the same xconfig config file)

Here's another one.
Warhead at night. CAn't see anything! (and it's a clear sky too in that area)

Xconfig at night. Beautiful natural moon light (hey just like in real life!)

Sounds like you like Xconfig more than Mster's config now huh? :D

well, I like the TOD settings more than anything. I still have tweaked his autoexe's HDR and SSAO settings. I'm still trying to figure out why the vegetation (most noticably in the ice) look like this

Everything has this wierd fluffy edge to it and the Edge AA settings don't do anything to them.
Here's another example.

I did a few small SSAO tweaks but no matter what I set them to, it seems that I can't get rid of this...unless I turn it totally off which makes everything else look much worse. I hope it's not a tradeoff I have to live with...
