Does it support NTFS Drives?

Are you trying to install NTFS formated drives into the box and use the data already on them?

The NAS box will format the drives under Unix/Linux it does support Active Directory. It does not say anything on the info page regarding formatting the drives as NTFS.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I have two 750GB Drives I want to use in an NAS but can't find any that wont format them. =\

Yes, that is how I'm currently using my box. disk1+disk2 = Volume1 + Disk3= Volume2 +Disk4=Volume3

Granted you get the best performance if you match all drives in each raid (cache,RPM....) the same.

The cool thing is, you an support cross box backup. NAS1 => NAS2 via schedule.

TBH, I got these three boxes, to replace my big DELL RAID box sitting in the garage, however summers in FL create a lot of heat, thus I can't use it and won't move the DELL back into the house (wife and heat it creates). These are nice little boxes with some cool features like fan monitoring as well as email notifications.

|MaguS| , It's going to be hard finding a solution for that, unless you build a white NAS box out of cheap hardware (hopefully laying around the house) and use freeNAS.

Here are some shots of my current setup

i had buffalo 1tb(single drive) gigabit nas before and speed was pathetic.

it topped out at 15mb/s and that is with gigabit network. ask their tech support and they said that it was normal operation because it saves bandwith for other users. there was no way to disable that.

will this give me full gigabit speed from one machine to next?

I've had 10/100 drives that where terrible at xfer speeds.
My whole house is gigabit, I will say this is no where near as fast as my DELL box but that box is over $4K and this new is $320.

What where you using to test the throughput? I can run a test if you like and give you the results.

Is there a way to add Media Center functionality to it?

(really considering pick this up from you and just buying a 1TB Drive)

yes,
DLNA Media Server plug-in package for SR3/SR4 Firmware

Supports XBOX 360 for Digital Media Streaming
Supports Media Tagging for DMPs
Fixes Popcorn Hour timeout
Fixes Media Scan issue
Fixes PS3 Divx Playback issue
Adds M4V, MP4 and MOV file format/container support

There is a link at the bottom of my 1st post) for the download for this plugin from promise.

I just did a very informal test

Client iMac 24" 3.0Gig 4 Gigs of ram
Going through two gigabit switches to the Promise NAS

- 1st downloaded a 718.9MB .AVI file (starwars holiday special) from the NAS box
29seconds download
- 2nd uploaded the same file to a new folder - 1:14 seconds upload (*note this is a striped set with different drives(2))

Uploaded it to one of the stand alone drives (I think its a 160G WD drive) and it took 49seconds.

So it can only stream to PCs or DNLA compatible devices?

rudedog

TBH I have not tried the streaming part of it.

one more question, i see there are two USB ports on the back.
On promise site it mentions print server, and usb harddrive compability, can you use both?

one plug for print server, and other to plug in USB harddrive? or maybe two USB printers?

From what I can find.

Is a KB doc stating only one USB drive can be connected at a time because of the Freescale SoC chipset used.

I take the doc. as 1 USB drive + 1 USB printer not two drives (which get their power from the USB only connection), where the printer gets its power from an electric outlet.

I also found a KB doc telling you how to set up the NAS with iTunes so you can stream to your itunes client.

could you messure MB/s, best way to do so would be with FTP client.

from the look for the smallnetbuilder review, it does 20MB/s which is about 5MB/s faster then the Buffalo i had.

that is no where near gigabit speed.
