I don't have any pictures, but I remember this game a LONG time ago from my childhood and I'd like to replay it.

Here is what I remember:

-I played it when I was about 7 years old with my friend (means it is about 17 years old)
-Graphics were very simple. There wasn't really any animation. It was a top down view kind of like the original Legend of Zelda, but everything was point and click
-It had an inventory screen where you could equip your character
-I'm pretty sure I played it on a mac
-You started off in a village, and people killed your family, shortly after you wandered into a cave where some really tough enemies were.
-The layouts of the caves and dungeons were randomly generated, kind of like the original elder scrolls.
-All the items that the shopkeepers had were totally random
-You could buy things like tome of frostbolt (just one example, there was a lot of other stuff you could buy) that would allow you to learn how to cast the spell an unlimited number of times, or you could buy a scroll of frostbolt and you could only cast it once.

What game is this?

That sounds like the original Diablo...

Other then the whole family dying and bad graphics.

yeah diablo is kind of "3dish" and this was 100% top down. It sort of looked like the original ultima, except I think the graphics were a little better than that. And I defiantly remember you had to use a mouse. You used the arrow keys on the keyboard to move around, but you used a mouse to click and cast spells.

Sounds like Sword of Vermillion, but that was for Sega Master system.

Sounds like Sword of Vermillion, but that was for Sega Master system.

Sword of Vermillion had real time action-oriented combat and had the old style 3D "maze" levels when you left towns or went into dungeons. The graphics weren't bad either.

I know I haven't played the game you're talking about Zelda, at least one mac, but I'm looking around Moby Games just in case I spot something similar.

It wasn't one of the Exile games was it? Those were pretty popular back in the mid 90s. Though that was a bit less than 17 years ago...

Top-down RPGs with no animation.
