Is there anyone that has used an ATI card under Linux? Do they actually work well? I can't for the life of me get my 8800 GTS to work with more than the nv driver. I've tried several distros, and several techniques. Nvidia didn't seem to want to help either. I was thinking perhaps the HD4870?

I'm currently trying the 8.9s (http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux64/linux64-radeon.html) on my HD4870, Ubuntu 8.04 and having a fit over it. Enough that I'm pretty much all windows now, until I'm inclined to play with it some more.

Regarding the NV drivers have a look in the linux (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14) forum. I've been able to run everything from my old 6800GT up to a 9800GTX without much problems, all debian based distros.

If you figure out a decent way to install ATI drivers that works, please post it here?

Yea when I had an 8800gt it would work with the drivers they had back then. I haven't ever tried my 260.

My 7600gt loves my linux box thou.
