I am thinking Can I use it instead of 20gb one without loosing warranty ?

No. Not only will you void your warranty, the firmware limits the amount the 360 see/use to 120 GB.

This.

The cheapest way is to get a 120GB laptop HDD, flash it with the Xbox 360's 120GB firmware, and place it in the shell that your 20GB is currently residing in. Lacking the do-it-yourself know how, you can get the 120GB drive separate off Amazon for $139.99, free shipping, no tax.

AFAIK MS updates and dashbaord information isn't written to the HDD, its written to some sort of internal memory. Otherwise people would not be able to boot the console if they took out the memory card or HDD.

I just bought the X360 120GB yesterday. Paying over a buck a gig kills me (not to mention odds are the HD will have less than 110GB free) but the lack of any other option kinda forces your hand

Xbox's DVD drive is loud so I buy an overpriced HD to reduce the noise. I think I got screwed twice in that equation :|

I actually did what Medion stated in his post well back when the Elite was pretty new - so it must easily be over a year and a half ago - and it cost me about 45 in total including an official housing from eBay. You have to get a very specific Western Digital 120GB that they may not make for retail anymore but you just need to flash it using a commonly available program on the PC and then plug it in to your 360 for formatting. One thing you gotta remember though is that it doesn't let you play old XBOX games because the software BC is not on the HDD.

Isn't that downloadable? http://www.xbox.com/en-us/games/backwardscompatibility.htm

PC World has the instructions http://www.pcworld.com/article/150970/upgrade_your_xbox_360s_hard_drive_on_the_cheap.htm l

Y'know, that particular WD 120 GB HDD might be exactly what I'm using in my PS3 right now.

Edit: I just checked the box, and yes it is. Same model number WD1200BEVS - but with the retail box (bought it from Best Buy a while back).

I've actually been contemplating getting a bigger HDD for my PS3 (320 GB or even the new Samsung 500 GB one that just came out) so naturally, I would sell the WD I'm using. If any aspiring 360 hackers are interested, let me know.

No, that doesn't work unfortunately. The BC stuff is quite a large chunk of data - I can't remember how much exactly but it was like 1 or 2 GBs. I think that file is just a small update to BC.

If you already have a HDD then it is easy to fix because the same software that they mention in that article can be used to copy across all the data from your current HDD so you can move the BC stuff as well. I had a Core system, so before the 120GB I had no BC at all and therefore I couldn't copy it across.

For this to work, it is the actuall harddrive you replace the flash in?

Yes, the actual firmware of the hard drive is replaced by one that can be recognized by the 360. It's all explained in the PC World article linked above.
