AMD has stated that they will be keeping the Athlon name even with the X86-64 chips.

So you have a link?

If so, it would be quite a stupid idea!

The athlon name is getting long in the tooth!

Here's one, I've seen others just trying to remember where. http://www.geek.com/procspec/amd/k8.htm

And here halfway down http://www.vanshardware.com/news/2002/04/020422_AMD_Announces_Opteron/020422_Amd_Announces_Opteron.htm

And from AMD themselves http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_608,00.html
On the roadmap, it says Athlon (Clawhammer).

And "Pentium" is not? I owned an orginal 60 MHz bugged Pentium. That was 8 years ago. Current P4s share almost nothing the same as that hot, buggy piece of junk.

"Brand identity" is often more important than a name that seems "long in the tooth."

Expect an Athlon name.

yeah, Clawhammer is expected to keep the Athlon name while Sledgehammer is going to be Opteron (obviously)

I think they should just keep the code names. They are cool as hell. I mean, come on, how cool would it be to tell people you keep a sledgehammer in your case? Plus, they just conjure up mental images of smashing the crap out of things. The marketing schemes are endless. I've never bothered to look it up but do the words "Athlon" and "Opteron" actually mean anything? When I think Athlon or Opteron I just don't get any kind of mental picture at all.

Marketing kills the coolness of everything. :(

I think they'll keep the Athlon name for now, but the Hammer processor will prolly get a new name. IIRC, the Clawhammers are being called Opterons now, but I could be wrong.

Sledgehammer is called Opteron, and clawhammer will be called Athlon. AMD's already said as much (http://www.siliconstrategies.com/story/OEG20020424S0015), so basically all we need to figure out is what the suffix on the athlon is gonna be. They went from Athlon to Athlon XP, so now is it gonna be Athlon 64, Athlon 2, or ?
