Just played through Freelancer for the umpteenth time.... still my favourite.

^^ That's an RTS, not Space Sim :p

Check out Freespace 2. One of the best games I've ever played (together with the first) across any genre and platform. Search this board for "Freespace 2", I made a thread a while back about it. It is more linear than Freelancer but the excellent story and supreme gameplay more than makes up for it :)

Sadly, you'll find most space flight sims here....

EVE Online if you want a long drawn out space adventure.

Check out my favorite game reviewers take on EVE:

You can buy Freespace 2 and play it on Vista for a mere $5.99. www.gog.com.

K so how about a game where you built your own planet or are given a random planet with its own physical characteristics ( maybe when you buy the game your key or account is permanently connected to that single planet) and evolve a civilization n stuff then send em off into space to trade and battle or whatever with other players.
That would be the perfect game imo

Having to start out with nothing is better than being plopped into a character in the middle of some usual colonial war type story.

I guess the star trek online game will be the nearest to that but without the level of freedom

Well, there is Darkstar One and SpaceForce Rogue Universe...
X3 Terran Conflict will be released this month

They aren't as good as Freelancer was, but might hold your interest for a while...

The last great space sim was Freespace 2.:(
I have a hidden dream that is Freespace 3 now that Interplay came back from the dead.

If I recall correctly Freespace 2 was actually released as legal freeware at some point..

I'd love to see another Starlancer/Freelancer game. That was some of the best MP I've played.

Braben is doing Elite4, but it might take some time before we see anything about it.

Freelancer is still on of the most outstanding games,
featuring one of the best graphics of this genre even after years
and you will find a very active community,
which stretch and modded this game far beyond it's limits.
There are Freelancer modifications wich feature
* a immense variety of 100s of different ships including even Battleships..
So regardless if you prefer to fly a Battlestar, a Stardestroyer,
the Andromeda Ascendent, a Vorlon Planetkiller,
the USS Enterprise NX-01, A, B, D or E or
what else you can think off, you should be able to find your ship.
* totally new equipment possibilities (powerplants, scanners, tractor beams,
upgrades for shields and reactors, armor, radiation shields, ....)
to outfit your ship with
* a lot of new systems to explore
* the possibility of entering the atmosphere of a planet
* special features for clans and even destructible clan bases
* really unfriendly NPCs, which are a challenge for any pilot
* PvP, server war and a wide range of other events
* special server features include player cloaking, player - player docking,
NPC wingmans for hire and much more

You can get yourself an impression by the mod pictures posted @ The-Starport.net. (http://the-starport.net/index.php?option=com_rsgallery2&Itemid=57&gid=2)

Give it a chance, find your old Freelancer copy or get a new one for
lower the 10 $ / Euro (http://www.google.com/products?q=Freelancer+pc+game+Trent&btnG=Search+Products&hl=de&show=dd) and visit the global community, at

---> The-Starport.net <--- (http://the-starport.net/)

Get some of those outstanding moddifications for Freelancer and
the ModManager needed to install and a pdf-guide, how to get that done (http://the-starport.net/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=107&Itemid=43).
Visit the community and server sites, learn how to connect to the game servers,
join one of the clans ....
....... have lots of fun - 4 free!

Freespace 3 needs to be made already. 1 and 2 were just too good to not have a sequel. I want to blow up some Shivans again and fly with the SuperColossus being built atm :).
