My sister teaches preschool at a church and her laptop is the only computer the family has. I clean up XP every time I am over there, but last night I found cookies to many porn sites in the cache. I know my 12 yr old nephew did it, and I need to stop him.

It would be tragic if a porn pop up were to rear while she was using using it at work, and they are all click happy anyways. I need something lite on resources as the specs are really low on the machine. So please help me.

(Sorry I couldn't resist)

I've been kind of wondering the same thing, but I haven't come across anything that's easy to manage.

Easy to install, easy to configure, almost invisible, you can delete the icons and just use the web interface. Best thing is if anyone tries to guess the password you'll get emails about it. Can be used to block porn, violence, facebook, gaming sites, warez etc.
I had the same situation as you. I installed this, not a problem since, except I changed the address emails go to as this kid was guessing it 10 times daily. Little noob.

i set up at least 20 PCs with K9, great program.

highly recommended

another cool thing is that if you try to kill the app, or mess with it in registry entire network connection/internet goes down ;)

I'm this || far from installing it on the inlaws PC. I said next time I get called over for a trojan installed through false wmv DRM K9 is going on and all the junk will be blocked. Beagle's Dad wont be happy, but enough is enough with the lost Sundays.

I tell my sis that every time I fix her laptop. They just don't see to understand that no, they do not need that codec or any other media players installed. Its not a good thing and the makers aren't trying to be helpful in providing a dl.

Going to give this a go finally. Had someone trash a pc in only a couple months time with having updated service packs, AV, firewall, etc.

This time I'm going to try using FF + abp + noscript, K9 web protection, MSSE, spybot, and limited user accounts. Hopefully it will keep the viruses at bay.

It works as far as I can tell. No moar pron cookies, but that could be that he is just smart enough to cover his tracks now.

K9 is pretty tight. I installed it on a PC for a family whose son would always been looking at porn. For about a month solid I got the password reset emails as he frantically tried to reset the password himself, (They came through to a hotmail account I setup), after while they died off, probably got himself a girlfriend.

I get SOOOOO effing sick of having to go to a relatives' houses to fix their trojan/virus infested computer once a month. They always ask "how do we stop this stuff from getting on our computer?"

I say "Stop going to shady websites. Stop clicking on everything that asks you to install something. Always click "No" or "Cancel" on any popup box that comes up. It's not that hard."

Yea I would just use OpenDNS.

Well you don't just set it to the DNS. You need to register. Then set it up using the FAQ.

:D I have found the fix for this. When you are over their house, say that it is impossible to remove them. And that you will have to do a system restore NOW, or the virus could damage their PC more. They will say ok. And you reformat, and reinstall windows. Then for the most part, they lose something important and think twice before going through that again. At least it worked for me. (Tried it 3 times, worked twice)

You should tell them the virus has gone airborne. Then duct tape their doors and windows and set their PC on fire in the fireplace or the middle of the living room.

That should drive the point home.
