All you need to do is install the Xbox 360 software for Vista. You can download it straight from MS. Link (http://http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=Gaming) - just follow the menus to get the software for the right version of Vista (x86 or x64).

afaik all the xbox 360 accessories (at least the ms ones) will work with vista and the receiver.

Yap. As mentioned. With Vista it's plug and play. With XP it'll grab the drivers from the net. Otherwise you can browse to the MS hardware site and track them down. I really recommend the 360 controller. A lot of games including Crysis support it out of the box.

I was going to say soon as I read the first post that unless you're playing on an HTPC or something in your main room where you don't want the clutter of wires it is best to just go for the wired version.

I would always recommend the wireless version, I bought it and it's great for playing on the HDTV. Even if you are not planning to use the PC on the HDTV today, maybe you will use it tomorrow. Just be sure to grab a charge & play (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16874103066) kit too.
