Are Sony and MS paying companies to delay PC products?

Dead Space, Saints Row2 and Mirror's Edge are just the latest examples of products being delayed at least a week later the console counterparts.

What is the reason PC versions of games are not being released on the same day?

Apparently their reason is due to piracy.

very good reason

don't forget that interview what European Head of MS gaming division. they are doing this basically because they want people to buy console version.

In that interview it was stated that In Europe when people are given choice they would buy PC version.

I quote myself from Dead Space thread:

Delay on PC games is bad for most of us, but I'm afraid it's vital for console sales to keep strong, they would sell a lot less on consoles if they were released at the same time on PC.

Personally it's not very important for me, of course I would prefer simultaneous release but I have so many games to play that I don't care to wait some days or months. Anyway I don't play a lot of my games until several weeks or months after my purchase date, I like to wait for fixes and patches and not having to start over again because a patch that fixes gameplay breaks old savegames

I don't think Sony or Microsoft would pay them, I think the software companies get more benefit from delaying PC version, so no need to pay for this delay.

We PC gamers don't generate much revenue to software developers, so delays is the price we have to pay to get the same game than console players (they are who really pay the game development, or at least 80% of it). Today games are ultra-expensive to develop, they need to sell millions of copies to become profitable, so developers have 2 options:

1) Release a mediocre game and a sell a couple millions on consoles, much less than a million on PC, delaying PC version so that it will not affect console sales.
2) Release a superb game that every gamer will buy on their favorite system, you will sell even more millions on consoles, but game is soooo good that PC sales won't hurt console sales, so you can afford simultaneous release (examples: Orange Box, Bioshock)

Developers usually choose #1

I'm in agreement with Juanlo.

I don't tink it's piracy or MS/Sony paying off the developers.

With so much more money being made on consoles (and the ultra-high costs of producing today's games), I think developers are just putting more of the development time into the consoles version. After that is done, they'd probably focus on the PC version next. Which hopefully results in a game that is adapted to play on either platform just fine (ie: Bioshock, Mass Effect).

For me, it depends on the type of game. If it's racing, platforming, or anything with a controller, the release dates won't bother me, as I'd go for the console version. FPSers, strats, etc., I normally wait for the PC releases instead.

I agree totally.

Well why not release the PC version at the same time. More money all around. You are just pissing off PC gamers who more than likely refuse to own a console anyways. You are only getting the little kids that cannot afford a decent PC having their mommies buy them console games. Do you really want to cater to the pre-pubescent crowd only? I mean PC gamers are likely older, like 25+ with jobs.

How stupid to limit your PC sales, in fact maybe PC sales are lower because they pull crap like this. :D A little common sense goes along way, but I guess its all about the greed.

This was my thinking also. They are making PC sales worse by annoying their customers.

I was really pissed today. Was on my way out and about and was going to hit Gamestop, figured I'd call and see if they had Saints Row 2 for PC in yet, their website showed 10/14 last night still. So I called and the guy said "oh PC?? Umm, nah... ughh... ughhh thats not till november now..."

You tiny brained retarded #$#^T%#$!!! I come home and EBworld STILL shows 10-14!!! WTF. When was it delayed LAST NIGHT??? This kind of crap pisses me off and makes me want to just (lee). I was on my way money in hand and now they delay it for a month with no warning?? PC gaming is dying because the industry is killing it.

LOL, I was at the Gamestop counter last night with money in hand to prepay for Saints Row2 PC. Same exact deal, not out till mid Nov according to their computer. They said they would sell me the 360 or PS3 version, not interested one bit.

Lost sale till, at best, bargain bin now. I'll be up to my neck in games by mid Nov and have no cares about SR2. Or yeah, (lee) time.

There was an article on this in the past, can't find it right now but the jist of the article was that if they released them all at the same time, they are worried that a large % of the people would get the PC version, since it's typically better and looks nicer.. if they delay it they get more console sales with a higher price tag on the game and a certain % of people that just can't wait or have idle $$ and will buy both versions...
