The EE will run 999.00. I7 2.66 supposedly 284.00 and I7 2.93 just under 600.00 supposedly.
X58 boards, according to Kyle over @ [H] will range 230-mid 300's. Decent speed/latentency 6gig kit's approx 300.00. So ya approx $1000.00 should cover an entry level I7/decent ram/motherboard. Hopefully. :)

There are many rumors about prices like this:
Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz US$284
Intel Core i7 940 2.93 GHz US$562
Intel Core i7 965 Extreme Edition 3.2 GHz US$999
Source DIGITIMES (http://www.digitimes.com/mobos/a20080717PD222.html)
The above are estimated prices for thousand-unit tray but they usually are about the same like street prices after the initial demand is met.
PCVOnline (http://www.pcvonline.com/ProductsList.aspx?CategoryID=24683&23997&f1=117&f2=Core+i7) located in Canada are jumping the gun with pre-orders
Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz $339.95 CAD
Intel Core i7 940 2.93 GHz $649.95 CAD
Intel Core i7 965 Extreme Edition 3.2 GHz $1,099.95 CAD
At today exchange rate the above prices in USD are about:
340.00 CAD = 285.00 USD
650.00 CAD = 545.00 USD
1,100.00 CAD = 923.383 USD
I'm thinking about the pre-order, one off the location in Downtown Toronto is about 5 min away from me.
On the other hand if the NCIX located in Vancouver would match the price I would save 8% Provincial Sales Tax added to the above prices.

Provantage has the 940 up for sale with a supposed 9 days processing time so I dunno when you can get them? Must resist the urge to buy what I don't need. :headexplode:

Be weary of these kinds of sites, I stick only with the bigger names:
NewEgg, NCIX/US, TigerDirect, MWave, XPCGear.
A lot of these sites will charge your card, only they won't be getting hardly any stock in at release (if ever) so you'll wind up waiting 2-3 weeks (or longer) before you get anything all the while they have your money. Sites like Reseller Ratings and the like are nearly useless as they just pay people to bump their ratings. As always buyer beware, I like NewEgg's approach of not even allowing pre-orders on most items (except games); the flip-side is that they usually bump initial prices way up on things like EE processors.
My yet-to-be-built encoding box is eagerly awaiting Nehalem, got my wishlist all made and ready to go. :)
I'm gonna wait a while for this, I wanna see benchmarks first.

I only saw one benchmark slide so far and it showed this a NOT a worthy upgrade for gamers. Have you guys seen something else? Why so excited about this CPU/chipset?

x264 encoding.
I'm not even buying this for a gaming machine...sad but true, nothing coming out requires more then the system I have now.

Yeah i'm starting to save now, shouldn't have a issue with getting money before hand. But I really want to see some benchmarks on performance (mainly for gaming). And hey, if they aren't that impressive at least I got some more money to put into my savings :)

Oh, wow. I didn't realize they were actually releasing the low end models early. I thought they were starting with the $1000 model.
Good to hear.
Why so excited about this CPU/chipset? I think the excitement is about running SLi on an Intel chipset, otherwise its not worth upgrading the CPU if you already have a quad.... correct me if I'm wrong.

For gaming the benefits are not as pronounced, for other CPU intensive operations the difference is quite great.

I think video card upgrade is more beneficial then cpu upgrade from the current quads to i7 for gamers.

At IDF San Francisco intel demonstrated Lost Planet: Colonies:
1:29PM: Nehalem demo of Lost Planet: Colonies. Yorkfield vs. Nehalem. Nehalem is over 50% faster thanks to eight cores, faster cores. LINK (http://techreport.com/articles.x/15344)
I'm sure we won't see many games immediately taking advantage of the Nehalem multithreading, it all depends on the software developers.
I need upgrade badly, for me the Core i7 upgrade also means future proofing, there is not going to be any new Intel Micro architecture till 2010.
About the excitement. I believe people planning on the upgrade are always going to be more excited than people that are not upgrading.
For me the additional excitement also means being able to upgrade to HD 4870 x2. On my present set up even the HD 4870 is bottle necked.

So slaWter what is it going to be, the i7 940 2.93 GHz or the i7 965 Extreme Edition 3.2 GHz ?
The Extreme Edition because of the faster QPI link and better overclocking flexibility.

-SLI on Intel chipsets
-integrated triple channel memory controller
-no more FSB
-a good reason to move to DDR3
-return of HT (4 cores, 8 threads)
-...
