update drivers; get better DVD drive firmware?

Yeah I think firmware is your only option really. You could try something like Nero DriveSpeed (I can't remember what its called but its part of Nero) to reduce the overall speed of your drive so it doesn't try to speed up too much, but this would be a pretty short-term measure.

yea you can try lowering drive speed but thats about it.... windows is stupid and freezes if it cant read a disc... similarly if it cant connect to a network properly it just locks up

are you using vista? mine if its scratched it just doesnt want to "explore" the disc, but it doesnt freeze....

same in Vista/XP
After quite a while Vista will become accessible but XP not so much.
I keep shouting at it but it just ignores me, Then says I dont pay it enough attention since I installed Vista...
DVD speed is blanked out (I can change CD speed) with nero DriveSpeed in Vista but then its not a compatible version, I only use the photo editor.
