View Full Version : Help Needed: CCC starts fast in XP, but very slow in Vista
Hey guys, I'm stumped. As the title of the thread reads, (both on clean installs including Service Packs), once I first see the desktop wallpaper CCC starts very fast in XP...about 3 seconds, but very slow in Vista...literally about 40-60 seconds. It is incredibly annoying that CCC takes this long to start up in Vista.
Again, this is a clean installation of Vista SP1. I've tried Catalyst 8.8 through 8.10 and its the same regardless. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I noticed the same thing with CCC and so I dumped it and went to ATI Tray Tools.
I like ATI Tray Tools (ATT) MUCH better!! Starts up instantly with Vista and the ability to just right click and set the 3D settings RAPIDLY is awesome!!
My only complaint about ATI Tray Tools is that the On Screen Display is flakey. If it worked right I'd be able to ditch FRAPS too which would be a real BONUS!
Mine opens in 2 secs or less, on a 3 month old install of Vista 64. What else do you have starting with Vista? Something else is taking a while after the desktop loads and has priority over CCC.

I literally installed Vista, then the ATI drivers and there you go...very slow. I'm stumped and it's rare that I'm stumped on a PC issue.
Have you used Black Vipers suggested configs?

Mines a mix between "safe" and "Tweaked". Maybe just a good place to start?
Also, I'm guessing you've done the usual "disable all" on startup?

Very odd. CCC starts in 1-2 secs for me in Vista 64 ultimate.

Same than Xion X2, less than 2 seconds on Vista x64
Same here with all settings default or with my current setup. It loads before anything else in the task bar.

Same here. 2 seconds to load.
But you said you installed Vista, than CCC. What about the mb drivers?

I'm saying here that CCC starts slow under Vista for some time now. It seems loads faster if you have Raid 0 configuration, and i believe you are on single drive?
I have a few friends with regular single 7200 SATA HDD's ranging from 200 to 750GB who all have CCC load before anything else in the task bar.

Yep. I do that on every install. I did try it before the service tweaks and after with little difference though.
Same here. 2 seconds to load.
But you said you installed Vista, than CCC. What about the mb drivers? MB drivers were default Vista....slow CCC. Then I installed the latest Intel Series 3 chipset and SATA drivers with AHCI and still...slow CCC.

Again, in XP CCC loads nearly instantly as it should, but in 32-bit Vista its nearly 60 seconds. I notice most of you guys are using Vista 64-bit now. Wonder if thats a possible issue (at least on my configuration) seeing that I do have 4GB but am still running the 32-bit Vista.

I've tested CCC on a single drive in vista, and it's the same. 1-2 seconds load time.
32 bit Vista? I honestly don't know anyone using it, but I have heard that it's flakier at times than 64 bit. Hearsay mostly though..I don't know.

I'm starting to consider installing it just to see for myself if its any better. It can't hurt. If it sucks for me, I'll just restore a fresh backup of Vista 32. ;)

I'm on Vista32 and CCC was painfully slow to load up for me, so maybe they are on to something with Vista32 being the issue.
Hmm, interesting. Dren, you should really be using 64-bit anyhow. You'll only have 2GB of system RAM accessible in 32-bit, that's pretty bad for someone who forked out for 4GB DDR3.

Actually with Vista 32 you can use 3GB. I haven't moved to Vista 64 since I'd have to fork out another $150 or so to move there and with Windows 7 around the corner, what's the point...
But yeah, if I had it to do over, I would have bought Vista 64 instead of Vista 32...

Yeah, I'm on 64 Ultimate.

Yep, its pretty bad. I'm just afraid of incompatibilities still.

Yeah, I'm on 64 Ultimate.Cool. Well, let me poke around some more and I may go ahead and try Vista 64 soon. We'll see. :o
I do wish to add that once CCC comes up and Vista is entirely booted, the system is incredibly fast and stable. Just like XP. It's just the boot lag thats very poor on it.
I guess it only adresses 1GB and doubles it up over both memory banks. Didn't think of that.

Same, cept now I have it on my 2nd system with Vista 32 Home Premium.

Just imagine if it didn't and it addressed all 2GB AND I was running Vista with only 2GB of RAM. Wonder what would happen then? :p

I have vista 64 and 32 bit installed on my box and CC loads up in a secondInteresting, and I see your basic platform (MB & CPU) are similar. I'm stumped on this one simply because in XP it does load up really fast, but not in Vista even after a fresh installation. Makes...No...Sense. :o
Only thing is, you have DDR2 and I'm running DDR3. Hmmm...
However, if you don't mind me asking...how many programs do you have installed and what services are you running?
