I would recomend a Seagate 1 TB drive.looking at the reviews the Seagate 1 TB is even faster then the raptors with 100 MB/s read or write transfer rates and accessing data.It has the lowest idle power at 4.2watt.IMO

The fastest overall drive right now in most tests is the Western Digital SE16 640Gb.

For whatever reason, its faster than most drives in the majority of tests done in recent hard drive reviews.

I was just looking at this review and the Seagate 7200.11 1 TB sounded like it was pretty good.http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/terabyte-battle,1717.html

Most of the drives they compare it to are rather outdated. Its probably a great drive, but I'd look elsewhere for a better comparison of current models.

It has only 2 platters I believe, which help it a lot.

I picked one of these up a couple weeks ago and it is great.

looks like the WD 1TB drive has the same platter size like the Samsung..

The platter density should be the main factor but from what I've read in other reviews it has to do with the way they engineer the drive to be more performance oriented or heat\power\noise efficient. Which is why the new 1.5Tb Seagate drives are rather mediocre performers despite having the most dense platters of any drive to date.

The WD 640GB SE16 Blue is my next purchase..in fact i might be tempted to buy 2 for the price and performance of them.

I am tempted to get 2 640s, but I rather cut down on the number of drives in my desktop already. I have 4 hdds in my desktop now (raptor x, wd 160, and 2 wd 250s), the 1 TB would serve to consolidate my 250s and perhaps my 160..

I almost got this drive, but I decided to get the Seagate... I'll post back, when its installed and run a quick test. It was cheaper by about $30, and since its going underneath my WD 250GB black drive, no one will notice :bleh:

I want to replace my 3 drives with two of those 640s soon. A good speed boost and a another 400 gigs of space. :D

I went for the samsung F1 1GB and I could not be more happier. I went from a old seagate 320 and it soo much faster imo. You would not go wrong going with the F1.

I have 2 of them. They are by far the fastest and quietest drives I have used. Can't recommend them highly enough.
