I'm missing out SO much on the games right now. :(

I can't afford GTX280. Does anyone know when will the price drop on those will be?

If GTX280 is out of option for me, is GTX260 better than the 9-series?

I just ordered a GTX260. At newegg you can get one for $254 and there is a $40 mail in rebate. From what I've heard, eVGA rebates are extremely fast, so you won't have to wait too long to get that back.

PLUS, you get free Far Cry 2 and 3DMark Vantage.

I plan on selling my 8800GTX on ebay to make most of the money back, so I'll basically be spending $15 for a video card and getting a free $50 game that I want. :p

On top of that, with a well ventilated case a 260 should overclock to be about as fast as a stock 280.

Its not the HUGE upgrade I wanted but its a hell of a deal.

People keep telling me this but it takes 5 minutes to look on ebay and see that they are going for $150-$250. :p

You get international buyers who get overcharged for hardware in their home country and you get people who think the 8800GTX is still the best card for some reason.

I will get at least $175 for this card, probably more.

EDIT: BTW, $100 is a bit of an exageration don't you think?
Its still faster than a 9800GTX in most cases and has 50% more memory.

Yes you should be able to grab $175 easily for a 8800GTX,hardware can be scarce in various contries.Good luck;)

If you view the completed auctions there are very few under $220 that aren't selling. If I start my auction at $175 with a $200 buy it now and fair shipping charges it'll go.

Yeah, you're using a 6600 LE right?

I don't imagine anything runs too good with that.

lol, it was supposed to be temporary, but it ends up "permanent" anyway. If it wasn't for Spring Break 2009 in Cancun. As of now, I owe $1,100. Each month, I can make payment of $250-$300. If it wasn't for the Spring Break, I would have had GTX280 by now or something. But I want to play games from time to time, I can't have my computer sit in my dorm room and do absolutely nothing, but idle. :headexplode:

I recommend either getting a cheap 9800GT just to get some decent gaming in or get a GTX 260 for a more long term upgrade. Overclock it and you've got roughly the speed of a stock GTX 280.

I wouldn't bother with anything more expensive unless you have plenty of money to drop on hardware right now.

Yeah the GTX260 is the best "bang for your buck". The ATI 4800 series cards are aweful good right now, and a tad bit cheaper, but I like the extra memory the 260's have. (512MB vs. 896MB) I believe most future games will benefit from the extra memory on board, if you're a fan of AA and AF.

Yeah the 4870 looks like a great card, but its generally pretty even with the 260. They're either very close in most benchmarks or one or the other is dominating.

It just comes down to price and game preference. For me, being familiar with the drivers was a big deciding factor too. I loved my 9600 Pro, but I've been using strictly nvidia for 5 years now, and I used nvidia for 2 years before the 9600.

kaptkarl

The 4870's do not come w/ 1G memory as standard, but 512MB. However, there are some 1GB versions being released. These cards are more expensive, and from what Tech said in his original post, they might be out of his price range.

I've never experienced any major driver issues w/ either NVidia or ATI products. Guess I've been the lucky one. I've owned several of each over the years. I must say the ATI 9800pro and the x850xt were probably the best I've ever owned. That is, until I bought the EVGA 9800GTX+ 2 months ago. I do like the CCC of ATI better than NVidia's control panel.

And now I'm waiting on my EVGA GTX260 216core card. I should have it tomorrow.....should be a beast!!(nana2)

With 896MB of memory, I still say the GTX260 is hard to beat on the price\performance front.

Do you use the Q9450 for anything worthwhile?

At that price I'd buy the 4870 1GB it's faster than the GTX260 and has more memory.....wow.

Answering "yes" would be B.S.

An AMD phenom x4 is fast enough, and much more responsive/no lag quite unlike overpriced intel p.o.s.

corrupt logic :headexplode:
I was thinking less of buying a new motherboard for an AMD and more of OC'ing an 8400 or such like.
