They trade blows for the most part depending on the game, you also have to remember that the GTX 260's overclock like mad and also scale a bit better (performance wise) from the overclock vs a HD 4870 which has also been overclocked.
Honestly either card is a great choice and for those of you who like 8XAA or more go with the ATI series as they scale better than Nvidia with high levels of AA.
