Not nVidia hardware related, but sort of nVidia related none-the-less.
Rage3D was sent an OpenGL wrapper by some MIT computer student which let's > Radeon 9500 users run the Dawn demo in all her glory - check it out here (http://www.rage3d.com/articles/atidawning/).
Run's awesome on my 9700 Pro. Built in nudity too, but you'll have to figure that one out for yourselfs ;)

I am a touch disappointed... though it may just be me...
yes... dawn's skin looks great but her hair and clothes and eyes and everything else just look nutty :(
compare this with the truck demo video or the toys.. I am underwhelmed...
I suppose the nudity factor is what drove people to make the wrapper for this :) but other than that I for one am not impressed with dawn...
TBH... in technical terms I much prefer the ati demos... chimp in particular...
OTOH I would love to see the toys or truck demo's with a wrapper proggy as they seem to be quite interesting...
dawn nude == novelty... I reckon...
-edit- ok.. changed settings to 1600x1200... and looks a damn sight better than @ 1024x768
still lacking a touch after all teh hype... but a lot better than @ low res... for sure...

Yeah..Its great that we can run this on our cards. Does this patch work with any of the other ones?
Here's a screenshot I took:

I dunno Sazar, Her hair looks great, Did you run Dawn "Normal" Or Dawn Ultra. there's a huge difference,
Never seen such lifelike hair, Facial features ect

no, doesn't work with the other demos unfortunatly. Not sure if that guy is going to try and get them working or not, but I'll see what I can find out...

She is great! :D
Nvidia makes the best demo's.
How many FPS is dawn running on your 9700?
I cannot wait to get my hands on Dusk.
Well get her cloths off that is.
One thing's for sure. Nvidia and ATI's tech
are very close at this point.
Each card can render some amazing stuff. :) :)
You cannot go wrong with Nvidia or ATI's high end video cards.
Well there is a huge difference between NV3x and R3x0 cards. Example look the hair, its robust (not blended) with R300+. Also skin is less-detailed with R3x0, because of FP24 precision. Some other features missed too (like eyelashes).
Still, Dawn is nice demo, even with R3x0 cards.. have fun :)

I attribute most of these things to the fact that the demo is STILL running under an openGL wrapper...
I also don't think your fp24 argument holds any merit whatsoever.
Sure it's run under wrapper, but image quality is NOT like NV3x's.

But anyway, have fun with Dawn!

This is more pertinent to Other Graphics Cards :D

I'd say it looks better than on GFFX thanks to atis superiour AA.

Who else finds this interesting?
The following was said about the opengl wrapper:
It runs 15% faster than NV30 on the 9800pro, and it also runs faster than NV35 (we are unable to personally confirm this but a user with both cards and FRAPS could).
Creates higher quality images than the original due to the normalization being done in a fragment program (dp3/rsq/mul) instead of in a normalization cubemap which the FX extensions does directly in hardware
The OpenGL wrapper adds more overhead, as it has to interperet code calls for Nvidia extensions and map them to ATI/ARB extensions, and yet it still runs faster on the ATI card, due to its more sophisticated pixel shader engine.
That's um, scary.

Can DaveM who has both Radeon 9700 and FX 5900 ultra test it out for us ?

I think the higher quality thing is Bull. But I can't speak for that specifically. other than my experience with Nv30 emulation.
The ATI card is not rendering everything properly. So therefore its speed at this point is irrelevent in the demo. So who knows.
Secondly. It's heresay until we see a reliable benchmark.

Here's another one I made (resized from 1280x1024)
http://home.new.rr.com/clockwork2002/argh.jpg
Given that it had to be done through a wrapper, I think it looks great. I don't see why some people are trying to make comparisons. Hell, this was never even suppose to run on our cards.
EDIT: typos :(

Yes it does look good. I dunno why everyone is insistent on comparing it either *shrug* Maybe they just want Nvidia to look bad? Or ATI? who knows
It runs 15% faster than NV30 on the 9800pro, and it also runs faster than NV35
mmm.. R350= 15% faster than Nv30 and even faster than Nv35? :)
Nv35 Is not 15% faster than Nv30 ,neither 16%
in many situations NV35 is ~ 2x times the performance of
the Nv30.. ,so the logic quote above is wrong ;)
DAwn demo use less than 90 intructions counts shaders..
TRy with TIme machine ~300+ intructions.. 128bits presision.
there precision is LAw. if you dont have enough precision in
light reflections ,it will look unrealistic.
or the INferno new DEmo... with very realistic fire effects..
the instruction count of shaders should be beyond 500 there..
there are examples of FIre in Cgshaders site that need no less
than 1000. intructions :)
download the new demos at Nvidia ,try them with the wrapper :)
but now seriously, enjoy dawn ,but watch the Vulcan demo ,and the gas station, i cant wait to see a game with those effects ,the first one ,have the most impressive FIre i have ever seen in a video card.. dont miss this.. this is what we will see in games in a couple of years more with luck :)

Makes perfect sense though, considering NV30's terrible Pixel Shader 2.0 performance compared to R300.

the opengl wrapper overhead may be insignificant due to the demo is very video card bound, cpu has plenty of free time doing calls redirect/translation.

nah she does look fine chris :)
but when I fired it up and after making modifications to the settings I was not so impressed... I dunno.. perhaps sleepy or whatever lol...
I'll fire it up when I get back home later today and have a looksee :)

How kind of nVidia to share like that! :D
I'm downloading now.

Looked fantastic to me - Very impressive indeed. :D
Now lets hope whoever made this wrapper gets to work on some of nVidia's other demos!!

yes same here it looks much better than on my 5200. Talk about jagges. I seriously doubt it would even play with aa on as even without it things are mighty slow.
Now what may be intereesting is to play it on the nvcard susing the ati dll. By forcing them to use the arb path we could see just what they do perform like.
