I begin to doubt they exist. Supposedly the new 40nm cards are coming in march '09, which leaves them 4-5 months of window to launch a new card, and we still know next to nothing about them. I'm guessing they don't actually exist.

I am starting to believe they don't exsits,They may believe why ,even with the 9800+ the tempertures did'nt drop that much and overclocks was'nt that much higher then a plain 8800GTS which some would reach 840/2025/2250 and just needed one PCIe connector plus they still needed two extra PCIe connectors.They may be putting all there resources in a new chip.I hope so.The only reason to do so would be to take back the performance crown and then they would need a GTX 260 X2.But I could be wrong since nvidia likes to squeeze ever bit of money they can from a new chip.So we still may see a GTX 285 and a GTX 265 and a GTX 265 X2,all built on the 55nm chip.

All I know is, they better hurry up if they want to make the Holiday buying season, otherwise most ppl will be buying an AMD HD4850/4870 Card ...

Well, this news sucks:

Nvidia 270/290 in deep trouble (http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/11/04/nvidia-270-290-deep-trouble)

If one is to wait until Feb. for the shrink, then one might as well wait for the 40nm parts. If this story is true then it will be sweet Christmas for AMD and a crappy one for Nvidia.

I think NV's silence has befuddled the rumor sites. Now they're making stuff up.

I wonder if ATI is makeing any money on the HD4870x2 cards.

I'm still not sure where all this talk of nvidia being completely pwned is coming from.

The Radeon 48xx cards are good but the only one that has a major lead over the competition is the X2, which is still in a niche market since it requires a ton of power, uses multiple GPUs and costs over $500. The GTX 260 and 4870 are pretty even in most cases, with both cards winning by a fair margin in different games and the GTX 260 currently being a bit cheaper than even the 512Mb 4870.

Its like nvidia is suddenly being "zomgwtf steam rolled" because ATI has actually put out something that's competitive for the first time since 2003. Is that how it works now? :p

The Inquirer is probably the main culprit in spreading this FUD.

The press always likes to crown the company with the fastest card out there and right now that's ATI. Once you look past that top contender there are a slew of competitive parts from both companies so you really can't go wrong with ATI or nVidia on the middle and lower range parts.

Why? GTX 280 is still (by far) the fastest single GPU solution on the market.

Different price bracket. Most folks who would throw down that much cash will just go ahead and get the fastest card on the market, which is the X2.

I do not think 4870X2 sells well. It is too power hungry, too hot, does not work in all games, ATI makes (unstable) drivers for it, and is pricey. Majority a lot of people will prefer single-GPU solutions. Also, 2x GTX 260 is the same price as 4870X2.

Single GPUs: I do not see a reason why most people would prefer 4870 over GTX 260+.

You can get an old GTX 260 on Newegg now for 200usd with rebate. Overclocked to 660-700 that's a great card for 1920x with AA.

From someone who's owned the card, you don't know what you're talking about.

The card sells very well; it works in just about every game; it is no more "power-hungry" than 260 SLI is; ATI's drivers are NOT unstable; and it is not that pricey for the performance that you get.

The strongest card prior to the 4870X2 was the 8800GTX. Those sold for 650$ on launch day. The X2 is about 4x as strong and sold for 550$ on launch day. The X2 is a fine value for the money.

I think ATI 4870x2 is a good card and it will run with a good 650 watt power supply ,so it not that power hungry.It just been so long since ATI has been on top.But it is still a duall GPU no manner waht anyone says.But is is the fastest single slot card you can buy.

I keep hearing different stories ,I heard the .55nm part was not giveing good yeilds.and now I hear something different,It hard to believe that is uses that much less power.

Charlie is an idiot. The new Quadro FX5800 uses a 55nm G200 clocked higher than the stock 65nm GTX 280 and uses DRAMATICALLY less power than the 65nm GPU and it's available on sale already. So much for FUD, eh Charlie the ATI ass kisser?

Quadro FX 5800

* 52 billion texels/s
* 4GB GDDR3 @ 800MHz
* 189W TDP

GTX280

* 48.2 billion texels/s
* 1GB GDDR3 @ 1107MHz
* 236W TDP

If you want a card now, I'd wait and see when the 55nm cards will be launched. But if you're in no rush, I'd wait for the Nvidia DX11 hardware instead next year.
