under the advanced tab we have a setting that gives you the option to optimise for "CPU" or "Throughput."

now my question is what do the settings do. does one offer a better transfer rate or what?

i dont really notice a difference when changing the setting.

when i say we, i mean nforce2 owners.

Throughtput is the same thing as transfer rate. CPU would hypothetically lower throughput, but also lower CPU utilization. While optimizing for throughput would increase transfer rate but increase the CPU load.
