I'm running Linux (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) on a Dell Precision M70 that's equipped with the Quadro FX Go 1400 display subsystem. I ran Windows XP and Windows Vista on this system previously. It seems that under Linux the system's fans don't run as frequently or at as high a speed as they did under Windows. I had never really bothered to monitor CPU or GPU temps while using Windows, so I don't know what's normal for them.

I had a critical temperature trip point shutdown the other day with this system. The system log says I hit 99 degrees C! The lid was closed, the system docked, and I was using an external monitor. I installed monitoring software from the repository, and it's saying that the CPU sits at around 48-52 degrees C most of the time, with spikes to 70. It says that the GPU temp after the system warms up is always at 65 degrees C. The graphic for the applet may not mean anything, but it looks like it's sitting at the top of its scale, so I'm not certain whether what I'm seeing indicates that the temperature really is 65 degrees C, or if it means that the sensor is pegged and that the temp is really at some level higher than that.

Can anyone here tell me what might be an expected operating temperature for this GPU in this laptop?
