Here's a shot of the i7's on newegg, sadly they were taken off. Intel is watching sites like a hawk! But this is a real shot, or well...was haha.

$319 for the 920? And that's the "cheapest" model?

I think I'll pass. I'm just gonna' "soup" up my E6600 and Q6600. Then around march I plan to build a top-end AM3 rig as I hear Deneb will be a real competitor. Either way, I'll at least have killer rigs from both camps. :D

Wew Paper launch FTL.

i7's are great CPU's but I don't think I'll go with Intel this round. Unless AMD really drop the ball - again.

Sorry wrong wording. They drop the NDA weeks before the launch as to create hype and anticipation with reviews. Smart move really, much worse has been done in the past, I have no problem with it at all, just annoying for those hanging out for the procs.

I can't believe their lowest end cpu on corei7 pretty much outperforms a q770..I paid over 1000 bucks for my Yorkfield which is raped and pummeled by a $340 cpu now. Oh well that's tech for ya'. I am totally getting that "low end" corei7 for a second pc. To me anything that performs like the Yorkfield is good enough more my puny needs.

i7 is useless upgrade.

I'm waiting for true 8 core CPU.

You're going to be waiting a loooong time. They are going to 6 cores before they go to 8, you wont see native 8 cores 'till 2010 at the earliest.

I thought AMD is going for 6 cores only? Then upgrade to true 6 cores. I set my upgrade cycle as they release CPU with more cores.

Well, if it IS an AMD proc you're wanting, you'll still be waiting a bit. The initial Deneb's (45nm part) will be quad core, followed by a six and then even later the 8 core. Off the top of my head I don't recall what the time frame will be, I just know you're gonna' be waiting for a bit. :(

i dont mean to be a jerk or anything, but that's what you get for buying the top model CPU :o

I find the core I7 940 really appealing. I'm gonna wait till i see some benchmarks with some of the motherboards before i start spending money.

How long do you think it will be before we start to see revisions of the core i7 ?

Because nothing is more useful than an 8 core processor.

to those saying the i7 is a useless upgrade...go get ur facts straight before saying anything in the future.

If I can get a board for the i7 thats $200 and decent performance I will probably sell my laptop and build a desktop. I haven't been able to travel much as of late and when i do its mainly for work so I don't have the time to game.

Really?

Hear me out- I'm fully impressed with the performance gains available from the i7... they're rather impressive and far better than I expected. But let's be practical-

At least $314.00 (tax and shipping excluded) for the low-end i7 part.
At least $200.00 (tax and shipping excluded) for a low end x58 mobo.
At least $200.00 (tax and shipping excluded) for 4GB of lower-end DDR3 RAM.

We're looking at least a minimal of $714.00 for just the lower-end parts if one wanted to upgrade to i7. And we haven't even included tax and shipping yet. Over $700.00. That's a bit unreasonable to me. Honestly, I think these parts are way over-priced, which is only one reason why I'm not buying an i7... at least not yet.

The other reason is my Phenom 9600, Q6600, and even E6600 (all at stock speeds) are all blazing fast and are significantly more than sufficient to plow through every game I own or task that I throw at them. When I need more CPU strength I can always OC.

Nah, I'm quite confident that I wont be building another new rig until Deneb on AM3. But, I will significantly trick my E6600 and Q6600 out, I've got some pretty awesome things planned for those systems. :D

Right now, at it's current price point, I can't see i7 becoming anything more than a niche product- just like the A64-FX and P4-EE were. In the future, with newer models and lower pricing I can see it taking off... just not now.

I just really wanted that unlocked multiplier. I had never bought the Extreme Edition Cpus ever before but I probably won't ever again.

Well, what are you asking for it? Considering a 920 can wipe the floor with it it'll need to be under $300. :p :D

I did something similar- on launch day for the 8800s. I purchased two 640MB 8800GTS for a total of like $900.00. I'm never doing that again.

For a mere $300.00 my current rig smokes my previous rig which had the two GTSs. Kinda' funny (or sad), eh? :D
