Which type of transmission do you prefer? Why?

Manual
- more control
- more enjoyable ( unless you're holding a drink or only have one hand available )
- less expense ( when buying the car or truack and repair )
I've driven an automatic since I got my licence way back in the day. Only had one car that had a manual transmission for about 6 months. I prefer a manual if I got a sports car or truck, but luxury or a mini-van ( god forbid ) I'd prefer a automatic.
Just my 2 cents :D

I live in a city, where the stop and go traffic would make your right arm huge if you had a manual.

semi-automatic.....
F1 style....u decide which gear,press button...rest done automatically.
i just wish i'll drive something like that.....combines best of both...control with easyness.:D
Would you get the 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission or the 6-speed manual transmission for an Audi A4 3.0?
manual...love the clutch :p
By the way, did you guys read the latest Car and Driver issue? They compared the Audi S4 to the BMW M3 and the Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG. The Audi S4 HAMMERED the other two!
They also compared the Audi RS 6 to the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG, BMW M5, and the Jaguar S-Type R. And again, the Audi RS 6 smashed the competition!
It seems that Audi really woke up!
Go Audi! :D

I prefer an automatic. Because when you are in traffic you don't have screw around with the gear shifter.

I agree. I like automatic becaues of my long commute to work. I do like manuals better but not for commuting.

I will drive automatic when I am too old an weak to push down the clutch pedal, until then it's standard for me.
Or F1 style like the SMG M3. Man those car's are one of the reasons I like my job, heh. :D

Right....
Like I'm sooooo sure that milk-crate could sooooo take the Audi in the twisty bits. And look at the aerodynamics! Cinder blocks are soooo in.
Unless you're willing to spend quite a bit of cash on a car that has a metal rod for a rear suspension, you're only looking to make 190HP at the wheels with traditional mods. Want more power? Spend more chedder. New turbo, new fuel system, new shocks, new tyres....................
Gee..you have just bought a 99+ MKIV Golf GTI 1.8T with a APR chip making 225HP at the wheels that still has the same utility.

Manual, because then if you had to drive one, you'd know how. Also, as mentioned if something went wrong it's much less expensive to replace. Just ask me. I spent almost 2k replacing my Dodge's automatic trans.

Cost isn't an issue. A new automatic transmission is going to run roughly the same price as a new manual box. Same with the torque converter and flywheel. Most of the price came from labor. It's a pain to drop a transaxel (which is what any FWD and a few RWD cars use).
It all just boils down to how patient you can be with traffic. Thats why I own both :D

I'd get the CVT. With that transmission you do not get Quattro, so that's out! Plus, the accerleration is slower too.

nissan seems to be doing just fine with cvt and gtting good acceleration m8 :)
its all in the implementation and the powerplant used...
nissan's VQ powerplants are AWESOME... in the price/performance area :D
btw... I prefer a 6 speed shifter over most other tranny's though I would consider the f1 style paddle's :) as a fancy add-on...
I said that the accerleration is slower, not slow. ;)

Tell me why you need Quattro in the desert?

I'd be willing to debate that considering without Quattro the car loses almost 200lbs.
A4 : 3.0-liter, 6-speed manual
Road Holding: 0.82 g.
Acceleration: 0-60 mph in 7.1 sec. 1/4-mile in 15.6 sec.
3627lbs
A4 : 3.0-liter, CVT multitronic
Road Holding: 0.82 g.
Acceleration: 0-60 mph in 7.2 sec. 1/4-mile in 15.7 sec.
3462
Hmm....I think I would take a V6 6spd without the Quattro if I was concerned about performance. Although the Multitronic in manual mode looks to be quite the contender.
