View Full Version : NWN and Morrowind - how playable on a GeForce 3?

I have a P4 1.7, and a Geforce 3. I am considering getting Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind, but am wondering how playable each will be at 1024x768. I can play UT2K3 at this resolution and it's very playable, so I'm guessing both of these will be playable too (except for Morrowind maybe) Am I REALLY going to have to upgrade to enjoy these games?
Thanks,
Chris

..they are both fine at that resolution, just don't use fancy stuff like AA and AF and you'll be allright.

Yeah I've pretty much learned that AA and AF don't apply to lowly G3 owners. That's good news, though. Thanks panzaman!

I don't know. You should be able to get away with 2x AA at 10x7.

Really? I played it last year on a P4 2.4B with 512MB of 1066 RDRAM and a Ti4400 and ran it at 10x7 with 2x AA and 4x AF and thought the fps kinda sucked.

I ran morrowind on my g4 ti4400 on a xp1600+ @1024x768 70% view distance and the fps were not that great (no aa, no af).

Is that a GeForce3 Ti?
I say buy the games and then if you find the performance isn't all that good upgrade.
I think you should be fine but you might have to turn off some of the eye candy.
Morrowwind is a CPU hog it doesn't really care much about GPU speed.

NWN is fine for me on my 1.4 Tbird and GF3.. Morrowind runs at about 20-25 FPS at 1024 with shadows. Can't get it higher, even by using a crappy res, either, so I assume it's a CPU thing.

Mostly true, but I enjoyed quite a performance leap when I switched from that Ti4400 to a 9700 Pro last fall. Now I run it at 12x9 at 4x AA and 8x AF (quality) and it's still faster than before.
BTW - Bloodmoon should be out next week. Can't wait.

Morrowind is so CPU I gotta wonder if 8xS would slow it down significantly :)
When I last played Morrowwind, I had an 8500le and a 2100+, the game was sticky...I havent tried it with my new card yet...
Neverwinter Nights should be fine, but morrowind is always slow, you can change some stuff in the configuration file to make it run alot faster but I dont know how. Also those games both use pixel shading for rendering special water effects, particularly morrowind is awsome. I run morrowind @ 1280x960 with 4XS AA with fps between 5-30 or without AA about 15-30 so this game has always been slow on mine. Neverwinter Nights is not so demanding and it is really an awsome game!:D

To be honest, I imagine NWN will run faster on your Geforce 3 than some modern ATI cards,
NWN does not like ATI cards at all for some reasons. I had huge slowdowns in that game when I upgraded from a geforce 4 ti 4200 to my 9500 Pro
