View Full Version : I heard something about latest CAT drivers- rumour??

I can't remember where, but I heard that w/ the newer CAT drivers, they are meant to be installed over any previous CAT drivers.
Does this mean that, with a brand new system, never having any CAT drivers on it, it may be neccesary to install an older version of CAT drivers, and THEN a new set?
Maybe I'me getting old, and making things up, anyone confirm or deny?

I bought a 9800 on Friday (upgraded from an Nvidia 4600) and installed the 3.4 drivers from ATI as the first set of ATI drivers on the machine (WinXP Pro) and haven't had any problems at all.

I've just had a quick chat with one of the Catalyst Beta testers, and he's confirmed that this story is false. You don't need to install an older set of Catalysts before you install the new ones.

I installed both me 9700 & 9000 using the Cat 3.4 set, in 98se & XP just spiffy....I'd call that a bit of FUD rumor. ;)

It's completely false.
I just did a bit of spring cleaning on my maching yesterday (literally..completely disassembled..boy was it dusty). After getting everything back together I reformatted and downloaded the 3.4's off of ATi's website. Everything is working just dandy.......
:)
Btw, where did you hear this rumor? This is the first time I have heard anything like that.

You must have heard instructions from beta update when Old version of driver is necessary to install & make small adjustments for testing purposes  nothing more nothing less ;)
It have nothing to do with us regular users.

So it's confirmed. I'm getting old and losing my mind.
Anyone seen my car keys?
..and where did I leave my wallet??
It's also false regarding a full format when going from Nvidia to ATI.
A boot into safe mode for both W9x and XP, remove drivers from "Add Remove", Regedit, remove anything Nvidia related.
Boot to dos, del nv*.* from whatever drive you are on.
Reboot, install cat drivers and that weird control panel thingy.
The only real concern I had with this card was from 2 cold posts, and a black screen.
Slap in an Antec 550w PSU, and I'm happy.
Perhaps I should turn off both neon blue tubes, and both neon blue case fans, first. :D

I've never had to format when changing video cards.
Just make sure u get rid of all the old drivers before u install
the new ones.
I went from a 9700 Pro to a 5800ultra and I had no problems at all. As a matter of fact my 5800 is a LOT more stable.
I've had no crashes of any kind sense I switched. :D

Who gives a fig why he did it? It was his money, that's how he wanted to spend it. Maybe it wasn't a downgrade in his eyes.
