No doubt 4800 series has done really well in term of sales, looking at the latest Steam Hardware Survey (http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/videocard/) we can see ATI 4800 series are powering 3% of Steam user rigs, while nVidia GTX 260 gets 0.68% and GTX 280 gets 0.56%. ATI has doubled (even more than double) nVidia sales on this generation.
King of videocards is still GeForce 8800 series with an astounding 12.43%. It's curious that current ATI top seller cards on Steam are the newest 4870 series (global 5th position, not bad at all for a card that has been out for less than 6 months), while nVidia's new cards are almost at the bottom of the ladder (38th and 41th).
That sums how bad have ATI cards performed (and sold) in the past, and how well nVidia was doing during their 8800 dominance era.

I still think 4870 sucks. AMD aggressive pricing is the main reason.
That's a very informed post. thanks for your input.

I never got a prompt on steam to do the survey ;(

I think they steal your system info... there's no survey.
Anyway it's good to see ATI back, but really, 4800 series vs single cards from nVidia? If this were 4870 vs GTX 260 or 4870x2 vs GTX 280 then yes, it would be impressive. Just think how much the 4850 must swing the results in ATI's favour...

Yeah, it's selling more than double than GTX series because people is stupid. Geez...

Trolling much? Why do you even come to this part of the forum when you only have negative things to say about ati? They are the reason you didn't have to pay 500$+ for those 280GTXs you have in you rig! Be thankful for that if nothing else.
I'm really glad that ati are doing well again! :)

Pricing is definitely a reason. Since the HD4870 was faster than the GTX260, ATI could have very well charged more, rather than pricing it competitively. The great price paired with the superior performance made the card a winner, and I'm glad that you realize this :)

IMHO the best cards you can have these days is either a 4870 of 8800GTX, either of which I own (well I sold my 8800GTX). Why did I switch to a 4870? Well I play a game with some seriously demanding texture packs, my mem usage at 1920x1080 would rise over 850MB causing some slowdowns with my 8800GTX :(
Anyways ATI made a good comeback, I'm still convinced the 2900XT was a failure, but the 3000-series and especially the 4000-series put ATI back in the game (despite some problems, i.e. the 4870 512MB bios problem)

i'm not sure why some people are so happy about 3%, you did notice that says series?
4800 series includes = 4830, 4850, 4870, 4850x2 and 4870x2. that is 5 cards lumped together.
taking that into consideration, that 3% is not really impressive. It is still more then GTX200 series combined (1.24%).
but again, 5 cards vs 2 cards
There are some cool stats on there... really goes to show what a minority most of us are on this site with our rigs... just over 50% still using single core processors shocked me a bit.

Well it's not about the "5 cards vs 2 cards" (btw nVidia has 3 cards if you count the Core 216 version, and the 4830 and 4850x2 were released in late october / early november so I don't think their sales count too much here), it's a reliable confirmation (with real numbers) on the success of ATI with the entire 4800 series. It has been really good for the market and it has forced nVidia to lower their ridiculously prized cards. It's good for everybody, we all know this, I just found those numbers and found them to be interesting enough to deserve a post

I agree with you on that part, just didn't agree with your comparison of series to single card.
