hi, quick question here. i dont no much about graphics cards so here goes.

ive just got a computer and it has a 256mb geforce 5600 card in it. my other pc has a ati radeon 9550 128mb. anno that the obviouse choice would be the 256mb card but ive been told the 9550 is actually better, any 1 have any ideas on which is best and which i should use.

thanks in advance.

Radeon 9550 would probably be better just because of full DX9 support, vs. the FX series of cards were notoriously bad on DX9 games.

9550 gets my vote.

The Geforce FX series were the worst cards NVIDIA has ever made. Bad performance in DX9 games and the first top of the line card in the series (FX 5800) was appropriatly nicknamed "The Dustbuster" because of the amount of noise it produced.

ATI on the other hand did very well in that time totally crushing the FX series from NVIDIA. With proper full DX9 support they crushed the FX's poor performance in DX9.

Considering the poor DX9 performance with the FX 5600, I'd go for the ATI Radeon 9550.

Also memory size does not mean a card is better or not. A 512MB card could be entirely crushed by a 256MB card. Alot of people are being tricked by the manufactures because they put 512MB of memory on a graphics card with a 128-bit bus, pretty much meaning that the card can only use 256MB anyways (or worse, some manufactures have even pulled off 512MB cards with a 64-bit bus...)

The 9550 wasn't that great of a card, though, not to be confused with the 9500pro which was 8x1, the 9550 is just a downclocked 9600.

5600 is faster, but yes, wasn't at all great with DX9 and had to use PS1.1 which means ugly.

Still, the 9550 is a pretty weak card with 250MHz core and 200MHz mem. Whether it can actually handle most DX9 games well enough would be questionable. It's still probably the better choice, though.

thanks for the help guys, looks like im keeping the 9550.

this made me laff, I dunno how any1 could put up with the noise from the nvidia card in question

Those people bought an ATI Radeon 9800XT shortly after hearing the noise :D

Both suck, but i'd pick R9550 instead. FX series were ****ty unless you want to play OpenGL games. In those GeForce FX will still work great.

I remember how badly my FX5900 artifacted on Far Cry when it came out. It looked so terrible that I used my old Ti 4200 to play Far Cry... and the Ti 4200 didn't even hiccup on it either.

FX series was Nvidia's darkest hour.
