Hi there, have any of you heard of creative zii-stemcell computing chip? Apparently it is next-big-thing that creative is going to launch during CES, you can visit the site here: http://www.zii.com/ Does anyone of you have any idea what stemcell computing is? I have never heard of such a term ... thanks in advance for ur kind replies!

I will only use it if they are adult zii-stemcells...I am morally opposed to fetal zii-stemcell computing chips!

:D

ummm...I got nothin'

LOL

i think they used that term to make technology appear more "organic"
(nana2)

Despite inventive copywriting methods this tech looks interesting.
I am just after reading some (further) speculations on trustedreviews.com.
All signs on earth and sky suggest a new powerfull chip will pop out from Creative's belly sooner then later and it might not be audio only stuff, for a change.

Will you be my friend Joey? :wonder:

this sounds like some kind of DSP or chipset component with maybe some 3d functionality. don't expect it to run Crysis though. it might go in something like the Zen players.

No. It will be the Nintendo Us.

Don't really understand the whole stem cell-computing thing, but I guess they are just referring to the multitude of devices the upcoming successor to the x-fi will be used for?

Creative axes 2,700 jobs, simultaneously lowers expectations for Zii

While the hype is bubbling over surrounding Creative's Zii "stemcell computing," the outfit obviously doesn't think whatever it is will turn things around. Instead, it has chosen to cut some 2,700 jobs -- nearly half of its workforce -- as "demand for its music players tumbled." According to a report filed to Singapore's stock exchange on December 31, 2008, the company had 3,100 full time employees at the end of June 2008, which is around 47% lower than what was posted a year prior. 'Course, we suppose the cuts aren't all that surprising after posting a net loss of $19.7 million on the lowest revenues in five years, but it still makes us wonder just how confident the company is about this whole Zii dealio.

Here's what i found!

Everything you know is about to change.

Drawing our inspiration from the intelligence of Mother Nature – who through over a billion years of evolution has designed the basic building block of life: the stem cell – we have created a stem cell-like silicon that is able to grow and multiply into different solutions and ecosystems.

With an investment that spans over 10 years, over a billion dollars and over 10,000 man-years, the world is poised to experience a breakthrough that will better lives beyond our imagination.

Even in the midst of these turbulent times, you will discover incredible recession-friendly business opportunities that enable you to thrive and prosper.

To find out more about Zii and how it can change your life, visit our booth (booth #30651) at CES 2009, or go to Zii.com from 8 January 2009 for updates.

Each ZMS-05 SoC has dual ARM-926 cores with 48 programmable processor elements (PE) churning out 10GFlops of processing power. .

Creative is claiming a Teraflop computer with the footprint of an A4 sheet, and a Petaflop super computer with 147456 ZMS chips in 576 blade servers.

So... Creative is now trying to compete with the likes of AMD and Intel...? Or I misunderstood what their goal for the Zii is...?

Im assuming they´re gonna mainly use them for multimedia devices.
Like perhaps one of them in a Zen MP3 player, 2 of em in some other device etc.
Just slap in as many as needed depending on the device.

Very interesting.

I'm still waiting for the perfect hand-held gaming\multimedia device. Maybe one of these will power it when it finally arrives. :p

This sounds like an FPGA, I don't see what is so revolutionary about it.

You gotta admire the way they spin it though. They make it seem like this is the future of computing overall, making it look to the laymen as if they can fit a supercomputer inside of one small IC, but the fact is that this is merely a possible future for small embedded computers in e.g. mp3 players, dvd players, dvr's, etc.

Creative is just another one of those companies that spends most of its resources on marketing and advertising and very little on actual research and development.
