Ok guys, this damn Intel fan is too ****ing loud. I sold my old computer and built a new one, but it's almost 3 times as loud and I can't run it at night because my family has to sleep and they won't let me run it in the day because they say it gives them a headache. What the **** do I do?? I don't even think water cooling is an option here....any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

buy aftermarket heatsink and install quiet fan on top ....... There are good fans that push 30+CMF at below 30db noise level .

water-cooling is always an option ;)

Impossible to say without more information regarding mainboard etc. I have however been successful myself with Artic Cooling (http://www.arctic-cooling.com/en/)'s heatsinks for AMD. May I suggest their P4 alternative "Super Silent 4" as something to look into?

Specs say it can handle P4 up to 3.3 GHz with a sound-level of about 20db. Realworld performance should be somewhat worse of course, but it's worth trying out.

What do I need for water cooling?? I live in an apartment building, and we pay for water and power...my friend doesn't (lucky bastard).

hehe you dont pay for water with water cooling... you use a small amount of water, and it just pumps it back and forth... it recycles it. read on the net for some articles... or try this site:

Are you kidding me?!?!?!

The CPU uses the standard Intel Heatsink and Fan. I have the 2.6C version of that chip. Perhaps there is an issue with your fan because Intel is not known for noisy CPU fans in the P4 lineup.

Take it to the place you got it and let them have a listen. If the fan is defective, they will replace it.

Hmm, your retail HSF should be almost silent..

I'm sure it's a defective peice.

it heats up like hell too......I can hear it kick in when I play a game.......it gets ****ing loud. About as loud as a Geforce FX 5800....I can feel the vibration from it too. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the heatsink / fan isn't attached properly or the fan is broken.

I checked it....it's spinning and the CPU heats up to 44 degrees C / 110 degrees F. Is it supposed to heat up like that??? Do I need better cooling for my case? I don't know what the **** is going on. I gave my dad the money and he put it together, although he did **** up the DDR config and had it in single channel, I set it to dual.

Temperature is fine. But the noise could be a dfective fan creating excessive noise levels. It happens. And are you sure it's not the PSU fan making the noise. Use a thin (non conductive) object to stop the individual fans in your case like a plastic knife to confirm which is the noisy one. Could be the vid card fan. Who knows.

I've confirmed that it's the CPU fan. When I go into my Asus bios, I see the temp go up and the fan gets louder and when it goes down, it falls to maybe 35 dB.

Spinning does not equal working properly. If the fan is unbalanced or it's bearing damaged, then it will still spinn and it will still cool the cpu. But it will also make a lot of noise.

Btw, you are sure it's the CPU-fan you are hearing? Because other significant sources are the PSU and case-fans, and telling them apart from outside of the case isn't always easy.

EDIT: Never mind, he answered my question while I was writing the reply

Spinning up and down is the smart fan on the STOCK HSF and is normal. My temporature travels up and down 15 degrees. It's normal as well. The noise is not if it is in fact loud. Get someone less picky than you to have a listen and if they agree, take it to the store. They will replace it. These STOCK HSF's are not normally loud enough to complain about. My 9700 Pro is louder and my Both my ENERMAX Whisper PSU and Vantec Stealth fan are louder than it as well. Stop wondering and get it looked at! It aint right!

it's not that's it's loud, but I can hear it....and everyone else in my house knows when my computer is on, so they won't even let me use it for too long. ****ing bastards! I'm gonna get a new case with better cooling so the CPU fan won't spin so damn fast.

I've built about 7 P4C's (w/ 800MHz FSB) and all of the fans were loud so I doubt it's defective.

Thanks, I knew it wasn't defective....but I need better cooling for it so it can shut the hell up when I play games.

99tolife there is one 'good' cooler that you have to get then. it dose not come with a fan though

You need to buy this http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/mcbarheat1.html its the Swifttech mcx4000, that company has the lateist revision witch allows bigger slower QUIET fans.

yes, that is a shameless plug for a local indiana resleller ; D (greenwood, to be exact)

Id also get this fan http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/92clearulwit1.html

I would first E-mail them to make sure it will mount, they have really good support! But id set it to the low speed and get 47cfm's at 28db's

BTW my stock fan for my 2.53 is silent.... not sure on the new 3.0c's though so cant say.

I've heard good things about the Vantec aeroflow fans, as seen here. (http://www.vantecusa.com/afc450.html)

Pretty quiet, and cools very well too.

Here is and overview from Tom's. (http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030113/cooler5-33.html)

If you think 35/Dba is loud then you have never been near a AMD setup before :D

Anyway, AMD setups can be fairly silent to, so yes, 35 db is a lot even for an AMD.

Athlon XP2800+ Barton < 20 db.. but it was a pain to get it there

I need to get a fan with less noise too, right now my 1800+ has a 38 CFM, 7000 RPM fan, and it's probably in the 55-60 db range... lol yes it does suck, almost as bad as a Geforce FX 5800.
