So im about to get myself a new Hard disk and was set on getting the WD 640GB Caviar blue WD64000AKS after reading all the nice reviews about it, but then i saw the WD caviar black 640GB which is similar but with intelliseek and 32MB cache.

Now im a bit confused as on paper the caviar black certainly looks the better option for a high end gaming system but i havent seen any reviews on these hard disks. There really isnt much in the price between the two so this isnt important.

Can anyone give me a little more insight into which would be the best option. ?

those 640GB black are just slightly faster, not that huge difference, still the same platter size.

and platter size (density) is the biggest factor when it comes to speed inprovements, cache only improves burst speed.

Sorry to throw you a curve ball but the new Seagate 72000.11 1.5tb hard drive looks good and got a good review on Maximum PC, you may want to consider it?

For maximum speed in gaming, I would recommend the 300gb Raptor if your budget allows?

72000.11 1.5tb is slower then those 640GB WD, and the velociraptor is just slightly faster not worth the extra cost.

The raptors are a waste of money, IMO.

I dont think they are a WASTE. They are good drives, and they sure do look pretty wicked. It all depends on the persons budget. Id go with the 640gb over the raptor because size/reliability is more important to me than speed/looks in a hd

They are a waste right now as often the WD 640s and F1 SammySungs perform just as well if not better in some cases. Now SSDs are coming through, the Raptors will wind down and perhaps the next gen Raptor will be solid state.

If you want TOP performance, go with SSD. Price is the biggest con with those, but the performance is great.

You can get a small 30gb for around 70 now.

There is about 10 difference between the two on OCUK at a glance.
