Nice!

Here is another link to a thread at Techpowerup. Apparently the driver also includes a setting for ambient occlusion!

Pics in that thread. EDIT: Pics appear to just be taken from Crysis without any relation to the driver. Pics came from here: http://www.incrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=17733

Causes BSODs' on regular basis on Lord of the Rings Online. The good news is that they almost fixed the DX10 shadow issues. The bad news is that they still not work correctly. Shadows render themselves to grass, walls, bridges and ore lodes etc. But they do not render on ground textures. It's a very strange bug.

Thank god! Maybe then they will go at more than 30KBps. As soon as I get the Vista 64 bit version down I'm going to upload to filefactory and see if that goes any faster.

EDIT: The whole internet is slow today. :( That dl link it about 2x as fast, at a whopping 50 - 60kbps.

I'm stealing your quote from your homepage to mobilenvidia. (nana2)

I went into the drivers to see what games were supported by ambient occlusion setting and only found these:

Assassin Creed
Bioshock
COD4
COD:WAW
CS:Source
Company of heroes
crysis (warhead not suported)
.gif may cry 4
Fallout 3
Far Cry 2
Half-life 2: Episode Two (only!!)
Left 4 Dead
Lost Planet
Mirror's Edge
The Call of Juarez
World in conflit
World Of Warcraft

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

I tried turning it on and playing TDU but I haven't seen a different. Might load up WiC next and run the benchmark.

EDIT: I can't tell what it does, but it sure kills the framerate. I averaged 32 fps with every setting maxed with AO off, then I turned it to high and got 15fps average.

Ambient occlusion is a shading method used in 3D computer graphics which helps add realism to local reflection models by taking into account attenuation of light due to occlusion. Ambient Occlusion attempts to approximate the way light radiates in real life, especially off of what is normally considered non-reflective surfaces. For example, in the way light through a small crack in the curtain in an otherwise darkened hotel room can slightly illuminate the entire room, and not just the path of light passing through the crack itself.

Unlike local methods like Phong shading, ambient occlusion is a global method, meaning the illumination at each point is a function of other geometry in the scene. However, it is a very crude approximation to full global illumination. The soft appearance achieved by ambient occlusion alone is similar to the way an object appears on an overcast day.

Ambient occlusion is most often calculated by casting rays in every direction from the surface. Rays which reach the background or “sky” increase the brightness of the surface, whereas a ray which hits any other object contributes no illumination. As a result, points surrounded by a large amount of geometry are rendered dark, whereas points with little geometry on the visible hemisphere appear light.

Ambient occlusion is related to accessibility shading, which determines appearance based on how easy it is for a surface to be touched by various elements (e.g., dirt, light, etc.). It has been popularized in production animation due to its relative simplicity and efficiency. In the industry, ambient occlusion is often referred to as "sky light."[citation needed]

The ambient occlusion shading model has the nice property of offering a better perception of the 3d shape of the displayed objects. This was shown in a paper [1] where the authors report the results of perceptual experiments showing that depth discrimination under diffuse uniform sky lighting is superior to that predicted by a direct lighting model..

.

Really nice to see that the industry is indeed heading in the right direction! :) Ambient occlusion should when utilized correctly add a whole new level of realism to video games. We still need faster hardware for this to become possible though.

Got the driver installed now and noticed very interesting new entries in nv_disp contain GT212, GT214, GT215, GT216 and GT218 chips. It seem Nvidia already has the whole new 40nm family up and running now. :)

These work great in AoC which supports ambient occlusion. I'm impressed.

If this driver have ambient oclusion - SSAO - for all those games, with a decent performance, is something incredible. There is a Russian mod - ENB series - which incorporates for many games SSAO, but the performance is very bad. I will test the driver .
