they surveyed 30,000 people or something.

Halo surprises me, the others not so much. MS are so incredibly dumb for not considering halo 3 on PC.

They'll release Halo 3 on the PC, it will just take 2-3 years from it's 360 debut to come out.

Halo Wars, Gears of War 2 and Fable 2 as well, probably.

its pretty funny that games that are as old as CS, CS:S, The Sims, and Diablo II still make the list in 2008. and people wonder why the PC market is struggling lol.

All three are timeless titles, I don't see what the problem is. ;)

CS is still the benchmark for aiming and competitive gameplay. Sims is played by all the casual gamers and Diablo II is still awesome.

Well I don't see how their survey has more accurate numbers than xfire would. It might be a little more representative of all age generations, but xfire has a lot more people to pool from.

This is currently from xfire for today.

World of Warcraft 7,076,019
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Multiplayer 4,323,343
Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer 3,135,642
Counter-Strike: Source 1,117,333
Call of Duty: World at War Multiplayer 1,039,481
Battlefield 2 760,897
Warcraft III - The Frozen Throne 682,737
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory 548,555
Grand Theft Auto IV 520,277
Guild Wars 494,025

It has been that way for most of the year other than WaW and GTA:IV being on the list. There are 12 millions xfire users and 300,000 currently signed in. COD2 has been at the 2nd or 3rd spot all year long, and no mention of The Sims whatsoever.

Sims 2 is currently ranked #55 on xfire, and that includes all of the expansions as one game. http://www.xfire.com/games/sims2/The_Sims_2/ They are averaging a little over 300,000 minutes played per day which is still less than any other game on the top 10 list for only half of the day.

Also Diablo II reports as #33 with 2x as many minutes per day as Sims 2 and 4x as many as runescape. They have about 3,000 people playing D2, 2,300 playing Sims 2, and Runescape with only 618 users.

xfire only counts the people who have it installed... Also xfire sometimes doesn't report properly. My friend plays eve non stop over 40 hours a week yet it has only reported him playing 5 hours because he runs two clients at the same time and causes him to crash.

Yes, but 12 million people is a few more than 30,000. One or two outliers isn't going to affect the stats that much on 12 million. I would agree it's going to be slightly biased against older gamers and female players, but it's still going to be representative of the majority.

Yes, that could be the deciding factor.

Also note:

Not everyone runs xfire when playing (to log their stats). Hell I've been a member since 2004 however I only have 4 hours logged.

In a select number our households around the US, chosen participants have an application installed on their computers, just like Nielson does with physical boxes- ie: cable boxes/VCR/DVD/DVR....

This application monitors all PC activities such as web sites visited, .exe gameplay, ect. This then reports back to Nielson for such weekly surveys as their "Video Game Tracking" reports that gauges game title awareness, purchase intent, etc.
