That's the dilema.....I can get a 295 for USD$480 or a 4800X2 for USD$380.....but, I know 3d cards always launch within a at least 2 quaters and for the same price offer more performance and you will always have some form of regret!! But...my 8800 GTX is getting a bit long in the tooth now....

Yea, at 1920 x 1200 1 GTX is a little slow. I've been pretty happy with GTX SLI, but I want to upgrade for the sake of upgrading

I've always upgraded on the even series in the past, but the SLI really throws a wrench into the situation. According to Anandtech's GTX 280 review a pair of 8800GT's in SLI is generally faster than 1 GTX 280. http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3334&p=14 The 8800GTX should have no problem matching that performance, but even the extra vram would perform better still in some cases.

There is no doubt about the GT300. But this GT212 only complicates the situation for the buyers. Remember the short life span between the 7800 GTX512 (GT200b), 7900GTX (GT212) & 8800GTX(GT300).

That's a very good point walterman. If they have done it in the past then it's more likely they could do it again. From a logical point of view it seems odd they would want to release so many high end parts in one year. I guess though the more parts they have on the market the more people they can get to buy new hardware.

At that time I got the 7900 and 8800 cards... I think I'll do the same this year.

I think the most discouraging thing is that all these faster cards havent really changed or offered alot of compelling reasons to upgrade. New features ect.

Agreed, and with millions and millions more out of work, and a lot more to come short term, defaulting on 8+ million more home loans over the next 12 to 24 months, this won't sell all to well.I think the GTX260 I have now,may be the last upgrade I do for my gaming pc.

My Q6600 can tear through anything, and other then ram which is cheap,I don't see the point in the I7,or DDR3 kits, again, given the current economic world meltdown. My appetite for PC gaming upgrades, has really gone out the window.Watching near 14k of NVDA stock turn to crap, and twice that in Intel stock, well, you get the picture.I predicted on HardOCP back in June 2007,that AMD's stock would hit less then 3 USD a share by xmas 08,and look now.NVDA will be worth no more then a dollar 30 odd,a share,by Dec 2009,and AMD a penny stock,if they exist at all.Luckily I shorted on AMD,last Summer and took back a lot of profit. My wife and I are doing the same with NVDA.INTC which I am going short long, will hit under 7 by years end.No doubt Philip Falcone is my hero !

The ops for shorters like my wife and I,are simply fantastic right now.

Well I went ahead and bit for a 295! :) I will evaluate it and maybe if the performance is not to my liking, I will sell it off in a few months.

being on a 24" monitor, you made a good choice. I expect you will get nice results if staying within 1920x1200 4AA
