half-step between GT200b and GT300
by AuDioFreaK39
According to a recent report (http://www.hardware-infos.com/news.php?news=2629) from Hardware-Infos, the specifications of Nvidia's coming flagship 40nm GT212 architecture have been identified and revealed from unnamed sources near Nvidia, as usual. To start matters off, GT212 is the successor to 55nm GT200b which is currently rolling into production. In comparison, the upcoming architecture is essentially following two similar footsteps of 65nm G92 last March - a die shrink to a smaller fabrication process and a decrease in memory interface width.

Can someone explain why it will only have 256bit memory interface though?

The higher bandwidth provided by GDDR5 offsets the need for a wider bus. Simpler design means lower manufacturing costs for nvidia as well. That's the basic reason.

Q2/09. I'm definitely not upgrading to the 295s :)
Well a 4870 clocked at 7Gbs @ 256bit bus gives a memory bandwidth 224 GB/sec :captnkill:. I dunno how close that will resemble the GT212 due to completely different architectures. If these rumors are correct thank god for AMD's 4800 series competition, competition = lower prices and faster innovation.

Can't wait for some Core i7/new GPU action this summer.

Wow, I wonder how much performance will improve...
Will this be cheaper than the current cards like the GT260? Sub $200?

Probably a $400 launch price or so since this will most likely be the high-end part. Maybe a ~ 280 SP card at a $250-300 point?

Think it's meant to compete with the upcoming 4800 successor, which would put it around 200-300$. The simpler design and die-shrink suggests a lower price as well. :)

Damn. No step up for me. :(
Bring it on!!!!!
Looks very good:
60% shader increase
40nm, high clocks?!
200+ GB/s bandwidth?!

In couple years Nvidia and ATI will make cards with 512bit wide bus + GDDR5 which will give some insane amount of memory bandwidth and probably free AA 4x.
About time Nvidia got off the GDDR3 bandwagon.... they've been riding that train for too long
I'm probobly going to get a GTX 295 skip this and go GT300 late next year.
I was going to get a GTX285 but I have decided to wait for this, as it will be a SIGNIFICANT upgrade from my 8800GTS512.

Upgrading is a big problem today.
You can buy a GTX 285/295 in the next days, or you can wait for the GT212 close to the summer, or finally, you can wait for the DX11 GT300 at the end of the year.
Dunno what you think, but, the GT212 should have been the answer to the 4870X2 (and not this GTX295), and the GT300 should have been scheduled for the summer launch with Windows 7.
Just my personal thoughts as a buyer in the 2009 crisis:
If i buy the GTX 285 now, i will wait for the GT300 & skip the GT212.
If i wait now, and buy the GT212, i will cry when the GT300 arrives with the rumored 512bit GDDR5 memory subsystem.
If i do not buy anything till GT300, as 8800GTX user, i'll be playing DMC4 only till it arrives.
If i do not buy anything till GT300, as 8800GTX user, i'll be playing DMC4 only till it arrives.
That's the dilema.....I can get a 295 for USD$480 or a 4800X2 for USD$380.....but, I know 3d cards always launch within a at least 2 quaters and for the same price offer more performance and you will always have some form of regret!! But...my 8800 GTX is getting a bit long in the tooth now....

This is just my opinion. But I dont think the GTX 295/285 were meant for the GT200 users. But rather the Geforce 7/Geforce 8 users who have been itching to upgrade. As Muya said. Theres always something around the corner. The longer you wait obviously the more value you get. :P I think the most discouraging thing is that all these faster cards havent really changed or offered alot of compelling reasons to upgrade. New features ect.

I couldn't agree more. In fact that is my biggest reason for not upgrading this round.
I may add another 280 though :)

Same here. I'll upgrade to the G212 if it's worth it. The GT300 is a must have though.
Timing is really unfortunate this year but luckily it's always possible to sell the "old" card(s) and get some money back.

As always, I want to get the best single-GPU card available every time they come out... but this year there isn't really any big game to upgrade for, so I'll probably wait a while. The 260 I just bought was basically a free upgrade and it should hold me over for quite a while.
... that said, if something in the sub $300 range in 55nm (or better) is released before my step up period runs out in the next few weeks I may be "forced" to upgrade yet again. :p

+1
Looks like a very good card but as chris said I'd like some new features and since my 4870X2 card still manages I think I'll wait for DX11 cards!:afro:
Thank god for ATi pushing Nvidia to break their limits!

There is no doubt about the GT300. But this GT212 only complicates the situation for the buyers. Remember the short life span between the 7800 GTX512 (GT200b), 7900GTX (GT212) & 8800GTX(GT300).
