View Full Version : Is the FX5800 teh best?
I was just wondering which is better out of the Radeon 9800 Pro or the FX5800 Ultra, I assume teh 5900 will own them all. Are nVidia making a comeback?
9800 Pro
Heck, the 9800 Pro is often on par with the FX 5900, and the 5800 gets totally owned.
9800 Pro is slower than FX 5900, but its IQ is also better.

The Radeon 9800 Pro is definitely better than the FX 5800 Ultra.
While the new FX 5900 Ultra beats Radeon 9800 Pro in majority of the tests, it loses in pixel shader 2.0 performance.
actually the 9800 Pro beats the 5900 Ultra.
I own the 5900 Ultra to back up my statements.

fx5800 ultra is the best nvidia gaming card you can buy on the market now.
9800pro is supposed to be in the same class of fx5900 ultra.
under dx9 specification, 9800pro beats fx cards horribly, unfortunely, there is no dx9 game yet. nvidia prepared Doom3 benchmark shows that fx cards may do very well against 9700/9800 pro with proprietary opengl extension, since neither Doom3 nor dx9 games are out, its hard to tell how much better 9800pro really is in real dx9 games, its hard to tell how good fx really is in their proprietary opengl extension.
comparing 9800pro to fx5800 ultra is like comparing fx5800 ultra to 9500pro in my eyes. So 9800pro is overall better if you dont have any special reason to stay with nvidia, like linux or cg applications.

I guess nv40 will be the first time we will be able to tell if nVidia are making a comeback.
They could make a compback though already by sorting out their drivers so they are completely above board, robust and very fast. That would be a good start Also maybe an announcement by the company on a new policy in regards to benchmarking.

But he asked which is better between the 9800 Pro and the 5800, he didn't even specify the 5800 ultra but I took that for a given anyways.
A 9800 Pro will eat a 5800 Ultra for lunch.
Then again, a 5900 ultra would be a fairer match up in me opinion...a fair fight between those two cards is something I would like to see.

How about you wait until its released and not influenced by Nvidia? I think Terry Makedon said it best
"The Doom III benchmarks were instigated by Nvidia, using software provided by Nvidia, under the supervision and guidance of Nvidia. In at least one case, they were actually conducted at Nvidia's labs. Currently Doom III is both unfinished and unreleased. As a benchmark it is completely meaningless at this time. When Doom III is finished and released publicly, our drivers will certainly be tuned for optimal game play."

5800 Ultra will eat 9800pro for lunch in Doom3, i bet again owned:
we'll just run our r3XX's using the R200 path (which carmack said is faster than NV30 path) and we'll use YOU guys to tell the rest of the world that even though it uses less percision and slightly degrades image quality it's just as good. THEN WE WILL CLAIM D3 SPEED SUPERIORITY!!!! muhahahahaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JC said nv30 path is fastest, but running r200 path is certainly a right step in the right direction for you :rofl
show me the quote where carmack said nv30 path is fastest please.

The Nvidia card will be fastest with "r_renderer nv30", while the ATI will be a tiny bit faster in the "r_renderer R200" mode instead of the "r_renderer ARB2" mode that it defaults to (which gives some minor quality improvements). The "gfxinfo" command will dump relevant information about the functioning renderer modes and optimizations. At some point, after we have documented all of the options and provided multiple datasets, Doom is going to be an excellent benchmarking tool, but for now you can still make some rough assessments with it."
