View Full Version : So I RMA'd my EVGA 8800GTX and they sent back a gtx260
I'm a bit out of the tech loop lately.. Is the 260 comparable to the 8800gtx? (Yes I know it's newer) But I also know this..
1. My 8800gtx was $659.00 16 months or so ago, this card is what.. $250 new?
2. I'm only playing one game at the moment (WOW) and my FPS didn't change much at all.
So was recieving the 260 instead of my 8800gtx a score?
Are they close in terms of performance, or is the 260 supposed to run circles arount the 8800?
u got a nice little free upgrade.

A definite score. The 260 runs circles around the 8800gtx.

thats a pretty enormous exaggeration. its about 25% faster than an 8800gtx w/ 4x aa. the gap widens at 8xaa when framebuffer/bandwidth become a limitation.

Its a definitely a good upgrade. Overclock it a bit and it'll perform pretty close to a GTX 280. :)

The 260 is faster, and it seems like a big price difference because the 8800GTX was overpriced and it wasn't until ATI came along with the 4000 series that Nvidia stopped gouging people on their prices which is why the 260 is so much cheaper.

Try 700/1400/1200, most if not all 260's will run at these settings with no probs :). I would say the GTX260 is roughly 1.5x faster than the 8800GTX when OC'd. Enjoy and grats

Funnily enough, I also just recently sent my evga 8800gtx back for repair (Died early December, been stuck with a crappy 7600GS since).
Should be getting my replacement on Monday. Not sure what model it'll be though. Hopefully they're as kind to me as they were to you :afro:
Yes sweet deal for you......very nice upgrade.

I was about to RMA my 8800 Ultra because I've been locking up alot in games and such but if they send me a GTX 260.. :/
because I'm pretty sure my ultra is better than a 260.

Hmmm... RMA a good video card to get an upgrade.... lol.
Well finally got my replacement card after UPS tried to deliver it 20 doors up from mine. Apparently they have no means of checking postcodes from their vans. UPS...GPS...one letter short I guess.

So, not a GTX260, but still pulls out about 3000 points more in 3dmark06 than the 8800GTX. And it works, which is the all important part. :)
Ah, every thing's back to normal. Time to get cracking in Fallout3 and Farcry 2 again :)
Nice upgrade, Smee, and way to use Denise Milani in your avatar!

Damn... you got a good deal. They sent me a 9800 GTX+, which, in all fairness, is an upgrade in nearly all respects. However, once you start adding AA in higher resolutions, it starts losing its appeal. It's a nice card though. Runs hell of alot cooler. :D
Enjoy that GTX 260. ;)
i sent my 8800GTX and theyre sending me an 8800GTX. Be greatful they sent you a 260.

Yeah I got a 9800GTX+ as well.....I should have whined about the frame buffer being smaller.....maybe I'd have got a 260 as well.
