Did anyone go from a single card 280 to single card 295? If so, how much better?

Only a little difference? Just out of curiosity.

For me a big yes , not a necessity but big improvement.

Crysis Warhead
Single - 27+ ( felt slow even thought Crysis handles low fps well an is playable, had to tone down effects to reach my preferable around 60 )
SLI - 48+ ( felt much smoother offcourse not quite there yet not gold 60 , but now can keep more eye candy on ;) )

Lost Planet Extreme Conditions
Single - Snow 42+ Cave 59+ (heavy snow battle dips into ~25 , feels uncomfortable even thought dip is short )
SLI - Snow 81+ Cave 95+ (heavy snow battle dips into ~42 , not noticeable slowdown , happy camper :D )

Left 4 Dead ( havn't tested much but...)
Single ~85+
SLI ~158+
( Both cases smooth and eye candy maxed out so no improvement... )

Supreme Commander Forged Alliance
( not exactly easy to benchmark but at least doubled frame rate had to keep shadows off on single to avoid sluggish game play on extreme battles with huge base something like 22 fps) , ( now can have shadows maxed out and still feels smooth in big base still no AA but very nice improvement :D ~40 fps)

And No i have not experienced microstuttering , yes i know what it is , best seen on ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 there is video on youtube playing Crysis microstuttering plain obvious. Its probably there up to an extent but to feel it or see it you need to be superhuman, recording frametimes with fraps there is millisecond variation just like shown on other websites however its present on single gpu also so people should not base their decision purely on some date thats not very well understood ;)

I have a GTX 260 and will be getting my 295 this week. I will report back.

The below review has a 280, a 295, and a 285 in it @ 700 on the core.

Interesting benchmarks in that review... it's funny how these cards can test so differently game to game, and even just adding 2AA can totally re-arrange the results.

I went from a GTX 280 to a GTX 295. I'm getting over 20K in 3DMark Vantage vs. 13K with the GTX 280. Also, Far Cry 2 and Crysis run a LOT better. The only think is that Crysis and Crysis Warhead will crash and turn off my computer after 20 minutes or so. No other game I have does this though so I'm thinking it's an SLI issue with Crysis.

If your pc is shutting off after 20MIN or so, then that is NOT an SLi issue, that is a PSU issue.

I totally agree with you newls1, because I have no issues running any games what so ever.

Important things to comment on when talking performance differences between the cards are:

1) What resolution you are running
2) What level of Anti-aliasing you are using

The GTX295 is a great card until you get to 2560 x1600 adding over 4x Anti-aliasing.

Another thing, comparing a single gpu 280/285 to a dual gpu 295, look at the differences in performance between a 295 and SLI 280/285. There is a big difference. Apples to apples/ SLI to SLI

Very true, however I dont understand why people compair the GTX295 to SLi GTX280/285's...Just doesnt make sense. The GTX295 is NOT 2 GTX280/285s, and there for should not be compaired to them. The GTX295 is more closely related to the GTX260 (I like to say GTX270) as this card is like a hybrid.... If you compare the 295 to SLi 260's then this is a more fair argument, however the 295 will be faster....

Yep if you want to play 2560x with 8x-16x CSAA try two of those for 298usd a pop-

It COULD be an overheating issue. Check your temps.

Well, to explain my thinking. Yes it is a single card (GTX295) but, you are still dealing with multi-gpu technology. If you are going to deal with multi-gpu technology, I myself compare it to 260/280/285 SLI setups because, single card or not, you are dealing with SLI profiles to gain the benefits/ performance.

Thank you,
Monnie

But your not dealing with requirement for SLI motherboard ;) , like in my case i could not have a regular SLI even if i wanted to ...

Very good point that I have over looked being I have a SLI Motherboard as well as thinking that most are considering the x58 SLI boards when talking upgrades. My bad for assuming.

What mobo are you using? Driver version? Processor? Resolutions played?

A lot of people are having those problems with GTA4, try turning off SLI.

I traded up from a 280 to a 295. Here's my 3DMark05 results:

GTX280:

20,657 GTX280 1920X1200 AA 0 AS 0 CPU@3700Mhz

But look at the score drop with AA:

16,014 GTX280 1920X1200 AA 8 AS 16 CPU@3700Mhz

(4,643 less is significant!)

GTX295:

22,873 GTX295 1920X1200 AA 0 AS 0 CPU@3700Mhz

But the GTX295 barely drops with AA and AS:

21,440 GTX295 1920X1200 AA 8 AS 16 CPU@3700Mhz

(Only 1,433 less is a great trade for the AA and AS!)

I got the right card. muahahahah!

I performed a ton of tests at 1050P using 16xAA/16xQAA with extreme IQ settings. If your interested. They show single GTX 260/280/295, And 260 SLI/280 SLI, and 295 Quad SLI.

I know its not the most extreme resolution ((was having monitor problems at the time)) but the performance advantage only goes up until you reach 2560x1600 with 8x MS. Might be worth taking a look at. If your gaming at 1680x1050 without transparency SS and low 4xAA you probably wont see a difference in the majority of your games though.

specs are and were in sig, when i had problems drivers were 181.22

since used driver cleaner and installed 185.20 beta

game is a lot smoother now with hardly any crashes, had one tonight but a lot less than with 181's
(res 1680x1050)
