View Full Version : NVIDIA to get Sony's PS3 GPU deal?
We all know Ibm gonna fab the Nvidia gpus
and Amd hammers aka axp64 and the future k9
and also we know that Sony needs a Cell processor .
Tell me what is the name of the processor that
scales higher with the numbers of cpus added ?
Huh that's k8 using the ht connections , and by that time maybe will use ht2 (wireless ?,fibre?)
We all laughed when there was a fake news
about the cell processor gonna be AMD based
http://www.flickerdown.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2233&highlight=ps3
but now we can take that more seriously
What is so bad adding a Amd 64 bit cpu,Nvidia Gpu and a vector engine "emotion engine" (sse on steroids) to the same package ?.That's a killer combo i tell you ...
By 2007 that would be quite possible , yah forgot to put Linux to the equation , The best
os for clustering after vms but who knows
by that time maybe linux will be on top :)

Actually, it's my understanding that each CELL is going to be comprised of a custom PowerPC core and a whole bunch of APUs (think 8). Rumor has it that they are hoping that the processor will run at 4GHz.
As to an OS, I wouldn't be surprised if it is a Linux variant since Sony offers a Linux development platform for the PS/2.
No point in writing a whole OS from scratch when they can just leverage Linux especially since it's networking shoule be rather robust and it's FREE.
But who knows. One for thing is that Sony would want to leapfrog the XBox2 technology as much as possible. So using stuff from Nvidia wouldn't be that desirable, since besides the COST issue, there is also the issue that Microsoft could buy similar (or perhaps even better) silicon from Nvidia as well.
EDIT: I found this article Sony to Boost In-House Microchip Production, Double CCD Output, Mass Produce CMOS Sensors at SCE Plant (http://neasia.nikkeibp.com/wcs/leaf?CID=onair/asabt/news/249981) where Sony was discussing the company's in-house production of semiconductors, and disclosed concrete plans for the future.
Sony Corp's Executive Deputy President Ken Kutaragi is quoted as saying
"We will continue to procure from outside sources commodity chips, de facto standard LSIs and chips used in small quantities, but we will try to produce within the Sony group as much as possible chips with which we plan to differentiate the architecture itself and LSIs needed in large quantities," he said.

PlayStation: Evolve, Multiply, Conquer (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?section_name=pub&aid=1724).
Won't MS be too "happy" about this? Heh.....
If Nvidia gets the Sony PS3 contract, what will be of the current MS - Nvidia Xbox contract? Will Nvidia still supply for the next-gen Xbox console?

Dunno, it's not like there isn't any competiton to Nvidia. Aftar all, ATI has AtrX who worked on Nintendos graphics controllers so they have expertise in that area (dealing exclusively with console designs).
Wouldn't think its that much of a deal for MS to design in an ATI controller.
Rumor has it that Microsoft wants to compensate the vendor through some rather harsh terms and I doubt Nvidia will be happy with them.
So far Nvidia hasn't sounded all that enthusiatic about a XBox 2 (XBox Next (http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois?ha+XBOXNEXT3-DOM&id=0)?) deal and seems to be concentrating more on ATI at this point. I would think Nvidia might be happy to let ATI get bogged down dealing with Micrsoft and thier console.
But then that could just be nejotiation tactics on Nvidia's part.
