Anyone else having this issue?

Just as I am praising the 4870x2 performance, I just started having fan issues with it.

It's making a clicking noise, even at idle, like the fan is rubbing against something in the housing. I don't see anything loose in there (which is what it sounds like), so I wonder if the fan itself is loose, or the housing is loose.

It's quite loud, but is not a constant noise. Doesn't seem to be related to fan speed.

Meh. :thumbdwn:

Visiontek.

damn thats a shame. how loud would you describe the clicking to be? louder than a mouse click?

Not quite that loud but noticeable... it's like something is rattling in there. I think the fan is just scraping the housing sometimes. Still fail.

I put Visiontek on notice.

This, after you got done praising the X2 in my thread.

Sorry meth... that really does suck. :(

Hope you get it sorted soon. :)

Well I emailed the Visiontek tech department about it and all they did was send me an RMA form. :|

So I guess that means either 1) I send it in and wait for it to come back fixed with no timetable, 2) I live with the occasional clicking noise, 3) I sell it to Redeemed for twice its value.

RMA or get a Geforce GTX 295 :D

Well I wouldn't feel good about selling it to someone knowing there is something strange going on with it, so I won't do that until it "comes back" from Visiontek, whenever that is.

Forgive me if this is an ignorant suggestion but, couldn't you just replace the cooler yourself? I know, you'd be "out-of-pocket" with that, but at least you wouldn't have to do without untill Visiontek fixes it.

What you could do, since the fan isn't working right, drop the GPU and MEM speeds down a bit to help the card run cool so that fan doesn't have to work as hard. Then, order an aftermarket HSF for the card, and once it arrives install it, crank the clocks back up, and call it good.

This is all assuming, of course, that aftermarket HSF are available for the X2. I honestly have no idea whether they are or aren't. :o

Just a suggestion. :)

Well the kicker is, if I try to fix it myself then I void the warranty.

As far as dropping the OC, I am not satisfied running it at less then stock speeds after paying for stock speeds. Besides, the fan speed isn't part of the issue... it's making noise even at 27% or w/e.

I don't know... I don't really want to do the RMA process, but at the same time I feel like I spent good money on the card, and don't want to risk losing the warranty by tampering with it myself.

Maybe I will get a replacement and RMA the card, and sell the fixed card. IDK.

Bah.

Is it an actual clicking, or more of a buzzing? I seem to remember some deal where the sticker on the middle of the fan was peeling up and making a buzzing noise. You might try taking the card out and turning it fan-slot down, just to see if anything comes out, like plastic shavings, that would at least tell you if its an actual fan/frame contact problem.

Nope, no sticker, nothing loose in there. The fan itself just rubs against the housing sometimes, and gets stick in there till I jiggle it around, which requires me taking the sidepanel off.

The card normally faces slot-down, so it's not likely that something is going around and around in there loose. My best guess is that the fan itself needs to be tightened down. I guess I could do it, but then again I'd rather not.

Can you see where its rubbing? If so, is it plastic? If it was me, I would just take a razor knife and trim the plastic a bit rather than go through RMA'ing it over something so minor. Then again, if its somewhere down in near the fan motor you're probably better off RMA'ing, in case its got some shavings or something in the fan.

Did you do what Ninja Prime suggested? Might want to...if a piece of plastic large enough gets jammed and kills that fan altogether your RMA decision will be taken out of your hands.

Yes I did, there's nothing in there...

Did you spin the fan with your finger, see if you could hear or feel anything?

Maybe you should just bite the bullet and get the rma done before it dies on and the card cooks itself.
