I wanted to experiment with dual monitors with the computer up in the bedroom, so I hauled my 19" Viewsonic PF790 up from the basement today. I tried it and didn't have enough room on my desk, so I decided to disconnect it and lug the thing back downstairs. When I was walking through the hallway that leads down to the entrance of my house, one of the cords snagged a railing above the stairs. I lost my grip on the monitor and it went out of my hands, tumbling down 6 steps and landing on the stone floor. Two pieces of the wall were taken out on its way down and the corners of the monitor are chipped. Thankfully (in an ironic way I guess), it's a flat screen Trinitron, so when it landed face-down onto the stone, the screen was not damaged.
I've been too scared to try hooking it up. Now I have to patch and paint the chunks of the wall too. This is what having too much confidence with computer equipment can do to you.

Whoa man, that really sucks :(
On the bright side though at least you didnt trip on the cable and fall down the stairs.
Now that would cause a lot more to be worried about.

ouch that hurts, thats why I keep all my stuff on one level. As long as it works I guess, may look ugly and beat up, but if it works it works, just keep it in the dark, or dress it up a little:D
its better for it to have been the monitor than you tho bud, any chance or a warranty covering that type of damage?

Yeah, it's a good thing you didn't get hurt. Broken necks are a lot harder to mend than broken CRT's. :)

On the brightside, equipment can be replaced a lot easier than people can. I'm glad you weren't hurt.

Kiler...
Yeah plug it in and get busy already. Next time I will have you come up to Blair and help me carry some 75 pound 21 inchers up some stairs.

Oops!! That's too bad!
Is it working now?
As said above, good you didn't have the same end as your monitor.
A guy from my country was receiving a ViewSonic P225F (22"!!), after a lot of problems (his previous P225 died after two months and had problems with the seller and making use of the warranty). What happened? Two guys were carrying it (at the customs or so), then the basement of the box opened and the monitor fell. Yes!! Imagine the size of the monitor and the strength of the hit. Guess what? The monitor still worked!!
They guys just had to fix some scratches, even sent pics of the monitor to the customer, and everything was ok. A friend of his tested the monitor (because he lives very far away from this airport), going throught all resolutions and refreshes, and told his it was working ok. If he didn't like the monitor, they offered getting another one from USA. (Cool customer support/service, opposed to the one he got from the original seller, who didn't do anything for the warranty :( ).
I wonder how the CRT didn't just explode....
