View Full Version : Found something disturbing about Opera

I went to one of my regular scan groups sites to get an update to a manga and when I went to download a chapter I noticed that Opera was already downloading the file in the background before I chose to save it (when it prompts you to save, open or cancel). I noticed this by looking at the status bar in the bottom, it was transfer over 3MB of data (also considering that once I clicked save it downloaded the 5MB file in less then a second).
Couldn't this be a big security flaw? I mean if a site automatically prompts me to download a file that could possibly be a virus (like those no no sites) that means Opera would download the file and not delete/stop it until I hit cancel...
You just made me happy I uninstalled it. Seems to me that would be a huge no-no. Did you check to see if it does the same on other links?

You know what? If I am not mistaken, IE does that too. When the download window pops up to ask whether you want to save or run a file, it's already downloading it in the background which is why you get super download speeds for the first few seconds after you click save. IE USED to do that (older versions), but I am not 100% sure if the new versions do that.

I'm pretty sure IE doesn't but will check. It might have in older versions though.

I never saw IE do that...
I thought it was the norm for that to happen. It's always done it with IE as far as I can remember.
EDIT: Yeah, just checked using the network monitor. IE pre-starts downloads, FF3 doesn't.

Funny IE 8 gave me no activity but I got several seconds or more of usage on and off from FF3, either way that's not good really when you think about it.

I remember this as well. We used to call it "priming" the download.
