View Full Version : NH-U12P vs CM V10 vs TR Ultra-120?
It will be my 2nd time getting a CPU cooler. So I need some advice, not very experienced. I was waiting on CM V12, but I hear it might not even come out until Christmas this year, I don't know if I can wait that long. After searching on forums it seems like I should pick 1 of these. I've also read Thermalright cooler can rip the mobo, is this true for the ultra-1200? Or is it only for the True Copper Cooler? I certainly don't wanna worry about getting my mobo ripped in 2 pieces...
Also some of these coolers only seem to support LGA 775, but if I remember correctly the stock coolers intel provides with in LGA1366 CPU and LGA775 are identical. So can I still use the cooler that says "for LGA775" for my i7 setup? I need to confirm this.
The reviews on the web are phenomenal, so I can't pick which one to choose!! Help me out here.

I highly recommend the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (http://www.jab-tech.com/Thermalright-Ultra-120-eXtreme-1366-RT-pr-4332.html). I've had the aluminum version for about a year and a half now and my system has been running cool and stable with a huge overclock and voltage boost.
Make sure you get the version that comes with the LGA1366 mounting bracket. You can buy the bracket from Thermalright but its obviously easier and cheaper to just get the correct one from the start.
I've also read some very good things about these if you don't feel like spending more than $40 for a cooler:

i am actually sort of gingerly looking for a 1366 cooler also, i hear zalman also has a new one.
ANd obviously there is the V8 from CM. Most of the reviews put the differences between the new coolers by only a few degrees.

Just get the Noctua NH-U12P SE1366. It's the best one. In Every review I've seen it beats em all, even when only using one fan, AND it's also the quietest.
The install is easy compared to the push pins on the AC Freezer I had. They say it's massive, though that hyped it up and it was a bit smaller than I thought it would be. It worked fine on my EVGA X58 in a Thermaltake Tsunami, although I can't use the 80mm side panel fan.
These pics don't show the fancy new fans they're using, which go for $25 on their own, and you get two. They do 55cfm silently. The Antec 120mm 55cfm fan had was way too loud.

I have one in my closet was going to put it on, but my thermalright is doing a great job, but the noctua NH-U12P SE 1366 is suppose to be better a few degrees, plus it is quiet.:)
Big Noctua fan here. The cooler is superb and their fans are some of the best available. I'm yet to see another cooler with such high quality manufacturing. Worth every penny :).

I have this one... it's maybe a degree or so warmer than a TRUE 120, but it's good value. I recommend it.

After careful considerations I have decided to go with the TR ultra 120 extreme aluminum version. Just placed an order with jab-tech.com. I will post back how my temperatures are. Thank you for introducing me to jab-tech.com, CaptNKILL. I wasn't aware of this site until you introduced me to it.

Hows those gtx295's running, finally got SLI enabled hey':)
Yes lol...it was one good long memorable pain in the lord's ass. Thanks for asking they're running fine now, I don't see dips to 30 fps anymore mostly 50. So ya the screenies I posted in the GTX 200 section are for a single 295, not dual. I didn't think going SLI for the 1st time would be this painful...but learned a lot as well.
I wonder when thermalright will release a new cooler, the TRUE is almost 2 years old.

I'm a happy NH-U12P user, it keeps my i7 920 fresh and cool. From the reviews I have seen it beats the Ultra 120, not by much but it beats it

It'll take time to top the design of the TRUE. They did just pop out the Copper TRUE 120, I guess they'll ride it for a bit longer.

The IFX-14 was after the TRUE wasnt it?
Just as a reference, how much temp drop should I expect going from stock to TR ultra 120 extreme? Last time I used Zalman on my p4 machine, it literally didn't lower any temps just quieter which is why I decided not to go with Zalman this time around.
Hm, I just installed TR ultra 120 extreme and I see that the temps have dropped by 10C more or less. It's now around 39-40C @ idle and 58 -60C when using prime95. But is this normal? Aren't I supposed to see more drops? I was expecting somewhere around 15-20C drop, but to be honest this is less than what I expected. I'm using the provided fan @ 100% speed all the time. 40C @ idle seems a bit high for this cooler....hm....

Mine idles at 31 @ 4Ghz with the Noctua. If I've been in my room for a few hours with the door shut it will idle at 33-35.
