here is what one site is posting as a RUMOR of the RETAIL pricing:

# Windows 7 Home Premium: $259
# Windows 7 Professional: $299
# Windows 7 Ultimate: $319

And an interesting note regarding Ultimate ...
Ultimate pricing is also present, and while Microsoft says it will not be selling that edition via retail, the company did say that it will sell and give away the edition during certain promotional periods.

I read somewhere that Ultimate would be distributed in every retail pack, but special steps to install/activate??

You won't be able to purchase Ultimate via retail, etc. It is an upgrade only version. Worthless, IMO. Especially after vista ultimate turned out to suck.

Also, All versions will be on the disk, it depends on the serial that is entered however, to which one gets installed.

Amyways, the prices sucks, as usual with Microsoft. And they wonder why so many people pirate there O/S.

wrong, ultimate is the only way to get complete features from Home Premium and Business version of vista.

Yes, that's what I was referring to. It was a lame way to promote that specific version.

i never bought it because of the extras, i wanted the better networking features and media center in one system

i never bought it because of the extras, i wanted the better networking features and media center in one system

today, MS has announced that there will be no EXTRAS in the ultimate.

Just the total feature set of all of Win7.

not surprising.
MS probably made them take it down.

Still, the rumored pricing is not too far out of line vs Vista retail, street price.


But seriously, If you were MS, what would you charge for Home Premium? (new retail, vs upgrade)
That's the versions they will be trying hard to convince 100 million home XP users to upgrade to.

My Guess:

New full lic: $260 is not outrageous.
upgrade from vista: $100 (can't charge much more for what is effectively Vista SP3)
Upgrade from XP: $190 (even though its a full reinstall)

I think there will be several upgrade prices. If MS just lets any Vista version upgrade to Win7 Ultimate for $100 I think the Vista Ultimate buyers would feel even more ripped off than they already are. Cause you paid to get some extras and you got none so the least they could do is give you a price break when upgrading to Win7 ultimate.

I'd think it would be more like:
Vista Home to Win 7 Home = $100
Vista Business/premium to Win 7 Pro = $100 or $150 from Vista Home
Vista Ultimate to Win7 Ultimate = $100 or $150 from Vista Business/Premium or $200 from Vista home

I want to upgrade my Vista Ultimate, I heard there will be a short time where I could upgrade Vista Ultimate to Win7 Ultimate for free around early July.

I think you are referring to licenses acquired after a future date (TBD) where Win7 is imminent but not yet available. (stop gap measure to avoid people delaying all purchases)

current lisc holders before that date, will just get the shaft.

MS is being tight lipped (translation: they haven't figured it out yet)
