View Full Version : 32bit vs 64 bit Vista

Hey all, hope you are all having a good one :)

So I am back into PC gaming after a 6 year move to the 360 and ps3. I just picked up a gtx 260 and found that my e7300 CPU was a 64bit chip ( I am way out of it ) So I was wondering ig I should bother putting 64bit Vista on my system, is it worth it performance wise and games or should I stick with 32 bit for now?

Overall, you wont gain any performance, it's very similar to 32-bit system. Some games do have 64-bit executables but performance gains from native 64-bit games seem inconclusive. It might become better when developers find ways to optimize it more.

Some other native 64-bit apps do gain some performance though. Can't give many examples, but f.e. 7-Zip 64-bit is somewhat faster than it's 32-bit version.

Today Vista x64 is very well supported, so most devices have drivers. There might be exceptions to this, so check that all your hardware have x64 drivers.

If you don't have 4GB memory and stick with x86 for now, maybe go x64 with Windows 7 or when you upgrade your system.

If compatibility with some software is not an issue, then go all out and go with Windows 7 64bit. It has even been reported that it runs well (relatively speaking in comparison to Vista 64) on as little as 512mb of RAM. With 4gb of RAM in my machine, it is extremely smooth and much improved over the Vista 32bit I was running. Areas in games that had some hitching are now a ton smoother, sometimes seamless.

agreed. my tabletPC with Win 7 64 bit simply feels smoother than 32bit. very nice experience

Form what I've been watching, the compatibility of software has been much improved.
(Particularly in games)

the weakness appears to still be in the device driver support for 64-bit by the HW vendors.

I noticed in the patch notes that Dawn of War II would only allow you to set Ultra Texture Quality if you ran the 64-bit version, but in the 0-day patch there is now a commandline switch to allow 32-bit users to run it too.

Not a biggie, but it does show some new games are starting to use 64-bit more.

this can possibly cause crashes, similar how cinematic mod for HL2 works.

32bit memory limits are issues.

360 was released on 22nd November 2005, How did you manage that?
